Default Help Please - Muffler Question

I have a new 2008 Heritage Softail Classic. I haven't had a Harley in sometime but in days past I would holesaw the baffles out of the mufflers and go on with new sound. Can I do this to the 08 Heritage. I know it has FI but this is the only modification I would be doing to the engine/exhaust. I was told that I couldn't but I thoughtI might just be told that for the $$$$. Another question that I have is: If I decided to just put on Screaming Eagle Slip-Ons would I have to have the dealer adjustment?
Thanks for any info.

I am not a mechanic but I have done extensive work on my own motorcycles. IMO, you can't just cut the baffles out of your pipes. If you do that, you'll be running drag pipes essentially and you will cause your bike to run very lean and probably hot.

With the SE slip ons, the dealer told my riding buddy yesterday that he could do the slip ons w/o a race tuner but the bike would not run as well as it should. Generally speaking, anytime you allow exhaust to flow more freely, you have to allow more air into the engine and then add more fuel until you have a proper balance. To do it right you need a SE Race Tuner(or substitute), a SE air filter, and a performance exhaust. If I had a brand new bike, I would save my money until I could do it right all at one time.

Maybe somone with more experience on the newer bikes will chime in but that's what I think.

Thank you sir for the reply. I'm not a mechanic either but what you said makes total sense to me. Years ago the dealer here would (if you let him) drive a large hole with a rod through the baffles and get some sound. I had shovelheads back then and you know the rest of the story. Thanks for your time !!

From what I've heard you can change one or the other (a/c or exhaust) but not both. If you change both you'll need to remap.

heres the scoop, if you want a nice pipe with nice sound and not have to worry about other mods...buy the rush slipons 1.75 baffle OR SMALLER....with that size no other mods are required and I have heard from others who have done that all is fine and loud..even the rush reps agree....if you go any larger you will need some type of fuel nanny and a stage 1 air inake. Thanks for all the replys. Now, from what I've heard I could put the SE or Rush on without a major problem. Today I did talk to a Rush Tech person (Adam) and he said the slip on would be ok. The worst thing he said would be maybe some discoloration of the pipe, but probably not (from past reports). He said the oxygen sensor should adjust and all's well. I will probably get the 2" Rush and have the shop adjust (to be on the safe side). Thanks for your time.

bone, their really isn't anything to adjust unless you have the shop put some type of tuner on the bike....In fact be careful if you do bring itin with the new pipes on, they will tell you that you need a tuner installed....We already know for a fact that a 1.75 rush baffle coming out of a 2" stock header pipe will not require anything to be done to the bike(and it won't void the warrenty). The O2 sensors will be fine. Not sure I would go with the 2.0 baffle unless rush still thinks that is ok. I have a set of rush 1.75's and they are loud enough and still have plenty of back pressure(which is very important not to lose with performance). I didthe whole mod thing with 2.25's, air intake and a tfi tuner..it can get very expensive when tuners and intakes are added..If I had known what I know now I would have just bought the 1.75's first and been done with it....anyways just my two cents...gl
