Default Valve To Piston Probs??

SE cast 1550 Flat tops, .030" HG's, '06 heads (beehive springs). Is there a possibility of clearance probs w/a .555 lift cam? Stock rockers, valves, & valvesprings ok to use?

Thanks,

VicW.

I would say no, but you need to ck all these things yourself to be sure.

I have a .575 lift cam and a .030 quench and plenty of clearance.

What has the cam manufacturer said about clearance and springs? Presumably that would be the best source of information since he knows the cam timing, ramp profile, etc. to determine if the cam will work with stock springs, and if there are clearance issues or not with your pistons.

I think Pingman's on the right track, might be more of an issue with coil bind on the stock springs than valve to piston clearance..... coil bind will trash a lot of **** PDQ [:@]

I believe the '06 beehives are supposed to be ok for up to .600" lift, so I'm thinking coil bind shouldn't be a prob, but w/.615 spring travel on this cam I was hoping for experienced input here. Guess I'll see what Andrews says...

The best way to determine if youre going to have a problem is to look at the lift @ TDC which most cam manufacturers are listing next to the timing and lift specs. Max lift usually has nothing to do with piston to valve clearance since the piston is almost at the bottom when max lift occurs. The detirmining factors are intake opening and exhaust closing (how far the valves are off the seat during and near overlap). Most of the smaller cams fit with plenty of room to spare.

TDC lifts on this grind are .165/.158. The 'bolt-in' TW37's have .174/.148, so I should be ok there. I think I'm gonna give it a whirl. - Thanks!!

SIT: Good luck. Personally I'd contact BOTH Andrews and HD tech in Milwaukee before I'd risk busting a spring on what for HD is a relatively high lift cam--and if you check the valve spring specs in your HD SM you will see they are passed for installation with a substantial variance in spring pressure.

I appreciate your concern Harleypingman, & the Moco's lack ofQC w/the springs sure doesn't surprise me, but I don't have an '06 SM. I may be swapping heads & if so I'll check things out a little closer.

thanks,

VicW.
