As an old scool guy, when my old shovelhead's exhast was turning cherry red off the heads, there was something terribly wrong, usually an intake leak or engine timing was out.
I went out today to just warm up my new 08 Road King to get rid of some condensation from a tempoary warm day in a northern PA winter and noticed my head pipes was turning cherry red!
The bike only has 50 miles on it and i'm going to have to call the harley shop in the morning, but right now i cant sleep and wanting answers now!
I have no idea what your local stealership is going to tell you and they will probably take a look at your bike, but this is what the problem is. The bikes will idle with an Air to Fuel ratio of 14.4, which is very lean and will cause your exhaust pipes to glow red if you let it sit and idle for a while. There are several options to richen up the bike to run properly and cooler, but they will all cost you something. My bike runs at 13 AFR now and it keeps much cooler, but still hotter than my water cooled vrod.
What year and date did you buy your bike? I know it is an 08 LOL. But If I were you I would get some type of EFI tunner like a PC3 OR SERT OR THUNER MAX. EVEN A SET OF 02 IEDS.So that way you can get that bike to run right.

Thanks for the input guys!
I guess i'm going to have to throw away the EPA stuff and let this newborn breath!!!!
I called the Harley shop and their tech said that they all do that as a stock bike if you let them idle for awhile and then look at the pipes in the dark.
Guess i'm going to have to learn to be ahigh tech old school guy!!!

I AM WITH YOU...I JUST BOUGHT AN 08 ULTRA. I HAD THE BIG BORE KIT INSTALLED AND RODE IT HOME ON A 50 DEGREE DAY. A COUPLE OF DAYS LATER I RAN IT IN MY GARAGE AND IN6 MINUTES THE EXHAUST WAS GLOWING RED. I WENT STRAIGHT TO THE DEALER AND SOME YOUNG PUNK IN SERVICE SAYS, "WELL IT IS AN AIR COOLED ENGINE, YOU HAVE TO BE RIDING FOR IT NOT TO OVERHEAT." WELL, IRONICALLY THE NEXT DAY I GOT A SURVEYTO SEE HOW MY EXPERIENCE AT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WENT. YOU CAN IMAGINE WHAT I HAD TO SAY. AGAIN IRONICALLY THE NEXT DAY THE SERVICE MANAGER CALLED ME AND EXPAINED THAT THE OVERHEATING WAS NORMAL AND THAT TO FIX IT I NEEDED TO SPEND 800 DOLLARS ON A RACING TUNER. WHY SHOULD I SPEND 25000 DOLLARS ON A NEW BIKE AND THEN BE TOLD I NEED TO SPEND ANOTHER 800 DOLLARS TO MAKE IT RUN RIGHT?
