has anyone put together one of the s&s 96 inch evo sidewinder kits? one of my partners is hot for me to put one together for him and i just wanted to know if there was anything special or out of the ordinary for me to watch out for. read over the instructions and didn't see anything too strange or wierd but you never know. figured i would ask where i'm sure its been done before.
The stock cases become a weak link when they are bored out for bigger jugs, I've seen SEVERAL cases crack in the area from the cylinder to the rear tappet block. A new casting, like S&S or STD, ro DELCRON would be a good investment with a big bore build.
I second that as well. In fact I made that statement in the past and had two other builders claim that it is never a issue?? I guess the broken cases we have are fiction LOL . The crack can happen and , I have many that they owners think it is a leaking gasket and not a case issue. I would start with a good set of aftermarket cases. I would lean towards S&S or STD.
I'll chime in and add this.
Absolutely no doubt whatsoever, that a 356-T6 casting has much more tensile strength that an OEM set of cases.
We have bored cases for over 20 years.
Never have witnessed a set of cases broken from a larger bore build.
We did witness2 bone-stock set of cases crack in 90* machined corner,(on our dyno no less)behind the rear tappet block, and know of others as well fracture there.
Not once from a larger bore build, and we do a lot of Axtell3 13/16" Evo's.(97") Working on the 4th one this year now.

You are lucky Scott....mixed with good too.....but I have seen them myself in 84through 86 so I figured out how to get 100/100 from the 80' and quit boring the cases for bigger jugs. (I decovered Bobby Wood shortly after this.....lol)
I am hearing what you are saying Doc. Maybe more lucky.
We are now, once again, Bob Woods largest account this year to date.
We were #1 in 2004-05.
