Default noise & engine teardown

My 95 RK had been running & sounding fine, after a ride the other day it sat for about 2hours, upon restarting it missed on 1 cyl. for a few seconds then cleared up but since then there has been a tapping noise, at first thought it was a lifter but elimanated that. The rear jug base has been seeping a little oil for a while so I figure tear the top end down & investigate. Did not have much time to get very far into it last nite but did notice when I removed the carb that there was a LOT of shellac looking buildup on inside carb throat & intake, have also noticed the past month or so that the throttle was sticking at 1st startup (explains THAT)
Anyone have any ideas at this point ? Hope to continue the tear down tonight hopefully will find source of noise ! This bike has 38000k on it sometime before I bought it it had screaming eagle heads-cam- etc installed.
Any help would be appreciated !!

The shellac that you describe is just all the crap (additives) that they now put in fuel. You may find that it is actually sticky to the touch. Pretty much normal.

Unfortunately you have already started the tear down. I would have done a compression test and a leakdown check. Anyway, let us know what you find.

From what you describe, there is not enough info to go on to make an educated guess.

if it was me i would of done just what dalton said..
i would of check all the connections first and checked the inginition and charging system also after i would of did a re-build on the carb.
as far as the tap goes i would of changed the oil and looked for any metal.

Was the engine temp high before the one cylinder started missing? Are the vent fittings in the heads feeding into the air filter housing? What color is the inside of your exhaust?

I only ask because that is the only way to diagnose thru a keyboard!

I had know way to check the temp, but it happened a week ago Sun--the hottest day we have had this year 95-100deg. Yes the heads vent into air cleaner. Exhaust is grey-black as its been since I owned it.
Update--top end is completely down now- saw nothing that should be causing this noise, although I did not take the heads down ( seems my wonderful son borrowed my valve spring comperssor ) only thing I've found is that it seems to be quite a bit of side play on rockers 2 have 12thou. 1 has 14 thou. the other 11thou ???
I was a auto engine tech for 25 years but this has me stumped ? Compession was all good before & engine ran like a top even when it started pecking (other than the 5 sec miss) One other note: when I was changing oil 2 months ago on a Sun I thought I had some more harley oil--turns out I didn't, on a Sunday & the best I could find was Vavoline 20w50 that stated was for tappet engines. The bike had Screaming Eagle heads-cam etc before I bought it--also has domed pistons .005 over .
Thanks for respones--keep them coming !!??

One other thing worth noting, after this started my first thought was dirt in a lifter--I run the bike on a 70 mile run after it started pecking & it never changed !

If you are talking about flat tappet I wouldn't think oil for that would hurt a Harley engine. If anything it would have even more EP additive for the flat tappet for where they run on the cams.

Well you have it apart some now. I'm kinds like these other guys, you may not find a lot wrong. Something here and there that would add up to a miss.

Can shim the rocker shafts with S&S shims.

How was the spark plugs?

Spark plugs were fine--thanks for the info on where to get the shims
I HATE not being able to pinpoint the problem

I DID run it HARD for 70 miles after it started--never changed

I guess when I put it back together I will know what AIN'T causing the problem---ugh !
