Default Another Oil Pump Question

How good is the stock oil pump on a harley, specifically an 03 twin cam 88 touring? I have ordered parts to do the stage 1. Hope to do cams within the year. Head work and 95" kit that. At what point do I need to be concened that the oil pump isn't doing a good enough job? I've been eyeballing the feuling. Expensive, but looks like it has a lot better oil flow and cools the engine better than stock. THANX.

For most builds the stock pump is fine. If youre going to spend the money and want an upgraded pump, upgrade the pump and tensioners to the newer style that are on bikes now.

A good upgrade but don't forget that the cams you would normally buy for your '03 won't fit, you need the conversion cams.

djl is right, their are conversion kits that require other cams. The SE kit posted earlier uses your original, 00-06, cams. The Andrews kit requires their "N" cams. Not sure what cams Herko's kit uses. Lots of satisfied customers from him. Google Herko to learn more...

For the money, which upgrade would be better? The Screamin' Eagle kit or switching to gear driven cams and buying a separate high performance oil pump?

Until over a year ago, gear drives were the only alternative. Now we have choices with the SE type kits. Gear drive requires your crank run out to be within a certain spec. And, if it happens to be within tolerance today, does not mean it will stay that way. Hence, after gears are installed, you are suppose to check for crank run out every ~30k miles.

For me, the se, Andrews or Herko kit.

The last year for forged cranks was 2002 and the last year for the Timken bearing was 2003, IIRC. You can twist any crank but crank runout issues did not really make the front page until 2007. The MoCo has changed the runout spec from .003" to .012" and .003" is the generally accepted outer limit for gear drive cams. You should check runout, just as a point of reference but yours is probably fine so a gear drive setup is also an option.

The SE kit (25284-08) is a billet cam plate allows the use of stock cams, retains the use of the Morse (non roller) on the inner tensioner, converts both tensioners to hydraulic and includes the upgraded oil pump.

You can go to the Andrews website http://www.andrewsproducts.com/motor...nstall_Kit.htm

and get the list of the parts to upgrade with different parts. The difference is that the cam plate is stock, not billet, but the inner chain is a roller chain. This upgrade does require conversion cams but you said you were purchasing cams anyway.

You can buy the parts listed on the Andrews site from a discount H-D dealer, like Zanottis, for about $370. Everything is incuded except the fasteners that attach the tensioner blocke to the cam plate but you can get those from any hardware store. Or get the PNs from a late model parts manual and order them when you order the other parts.

Herko will sell you either kit and will include the conversion cams in the package as well.

The last year for the Timkin was 2002 and the forged cranks were around two more years.
