I have a 99 Flht,tc88 engine. was riding the other day turned into the store and all of a sudden i had an irratic idle, it was backfiring from the carb and pipes and the only way it would run was wide *** open, so after may a long night trying to fix this scooter i am here lemme explain>>> 3 weeks later we have cleaned the tank completely 2 times [ found trash in it] cleaned the carb 3 times[ kept getting trash from tank in it], changed the fuel lines, changed the filter [ in the tank and inline filter], went back to stock jetting 45 idle jet 190 main jet [ had a 42 idle jet and a 185 main jet] adjusted the mix screw multiple settings we have tried, everytime we have cleaned the carbs and re adjusted it has gotten better.now the problem is this: the bike will idle smooth as silk, you can ride around at 5mph all day very smooth, but as soon as you get on the gas it begins to starve for gas and wont move forward, so i have to goose the gas to get it to roll, this is the same in every gear until i get up to speed. the problem comes back once you get up to speed and begin to just maintain speed, as long as you stay in the gas it runs fine but the minute you back off the gas it begins to starve for gas[ or thats the way it feels] . example: going up a hill it runs fine going down a hill it breaks up...now heres the kicker if a pull the choke about 1/4 way out the stuttering and breaking up goes away...im at a loss here...i give up!!
It sounds to me like you need intake manifold seals. If the carb ran fine with the jetting before you went back to the other jets, reinstall the jets you took out. Also check the float level while the carb is off to replace the intake seals. These are what I used on mine and they worked great. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1984-...Q5fAccessories
I checked the intake gaskets by spraying starter fluid all around them while the bike was running, no change in rpm etc..also put a new gasket between the carb and intake.. ive had this weird clicking in my rear head for sometime, alot off ppl seem to have a weird noise from these 99 tcams, i hope its not a valve problem. well im going to richen up the needle a click or 2 tommorow , the stuttering is coming at midrange and just after takeoff and thats what the needle is for... we will see
Like, bagger said, check the diaphram for tears. A simple test would be to push up the slide and see if it drops slow or not. Or run it without the air filter, whack the throttle and see if it moves.
