Around the spark plugs is where we check them some times running, sometimes just after turning the engine off. 285 to 300 is common.

When I am running data runs on my bike with the race tuner, it records temperature as well. Like king said I usually see between 280 and 300.

Shoot the temp at the base of the plug on the flat of the head. 300 is ideal for maximum combustion efficiency. Stock you will find the later modrl bikes in the 350+ range on the rear cyl, too damn hot !

Thankyou for your replies, have ordered a Thermometer, have fitted some rush silencers, with the 1.75 baffle and an Arlen ness big sucker, which i plan to run with no cover, and only Xied leads, with no other fueller. im not sure whether it may run way to lean,if the temperature, is around the 300 mark, is that an indication that it wont be running to lean? im wondering if i should have left the standard Airbox on and just run with the silencers at the moment, bike only has 400 miles on it.

If the front cylinder is running 300, almost assuredly the rear is going to be hotter.

On my 103 with the VIED's I am seeing 300 on the front cylinder and 340 on the rear...that is too hot IMO. I ordered a TTS tuner today.

Added some XIED's to my stock 2010 FXDC and it ran great. Couple of weeks ago I added some Rush Slash cut 1.75 slip on's, and now I have decel pop with and without the XIED's hooked up. Pulled my plugs and they appear to indeed be burning lean. I'm probably going to order a Big Sucker and a Dobeck TFI to get rid of the pop. Actually pops a little more with the XIED's hooked up. Maybe you will get lucky and not have any issues.
