Hi Everyone, was thinking of checking the cylinder head temp on my softail crossbones, with an infra red guage, can someone advise please what would be the average it should be , and where to check, think i remember reading by the sparkplugs?, and should i check immediately after stopping the engine.
Shoot the temp at the base of the plug on the flat of the head. 300 is ideal for maximum combustion efficiency. Stock you will find the later modrl bikes in the 350+ range on the rear cyl, too damn hot !
Thankyou for your replies, have ordered a Thermometer, have fitted some rush silencers, with the 1.75 baffle and an Arlen ness big sucker, which i plan to run with no cover, and only Xied leads, with no other fueller. im not sure whether it may run way to lean,if the temperature, is around the 300 mark, is that an indication that it wont be running to lean? im wondering if i should have left the standard Airbox on and just run with the silencers at the moment, bike only has 400 miles on it.

Added some XIED's to my stock 2010 FXDC and it ran great. Couple of weeks ago I added some Rush Slash cut 1.75 slip on's, and now I have decel pop with and without the XIED's hooked up. Pulled my plugs and they appear to indeed be burning lean. I'm probably going to order a Big Sucker and a Dobeck TFI to get rid of the pop. Actually pops a little more with the XIED's hooked up. Maybe you will get lucky and not have any issues.
