This goes out to all the mechanics. We don't have a mechanic around here to deal with this, so I thought we would give this little problem to the pros and see what YOU come up with.
Bike - 07 FLHX
Problem - Excessive vibration . Buzzing in floor boards. Excessive shaking to the point it's cracking windshields on bottom left side of fairing . Buzzing coming up through back rest making a long ride (4Hrs) uncomfortable. Buzzing in floor boards after long ride (4hrs) making feet swell up.
Engine - 07 Harley 96 ci engine. Rubber mounted .
Modifications - S&S 106 kit. ( pistons and jugs only ) Crank pulled and sent to Darkhorse for balancing and welding . New piston rods from Darkhorse. New Temkin bearings. Bob Woods 7G cam . Fuelings cam plate. Fuelings oil pump . Mild head work with new valve guide seals. 56mm throttle body with injectors. Fatcat 2into1 with quite baffles . Performance clutch. SE Compensator . New motor mounts . TTS master tune. ( Not impressed on his dyno job).
Attempted repair - Had engine pulled and sent crank back to Darkhorse. Installed new motor mounts . Let engine settle before installing stabilizers and torquing bolts . Bike still vibrates in excess. Buzzing . The only thing that hasn't been checked is the tune .
At idle - Bike shaking excessively. At 1500rpm smooth . At 2000rpm bike smooth. At 2500rpm bike vibrating and buzzing bad. At 3000rpm bike vibrating bad. At 3300 rpm no vibration. At 3600 rpm no vibration. At 4000rpm very high frequency vibration .Buzzing . Best way to translate the feeling is like to a rigid mounted engine at 3000rpm.
Would welcome any suggestions. We're at the point of selling the bike .
runout was checked. Third party the first time. I sent it the second time.
What are the before/after runout specs? Why was the crank sent back to Hoban the second time? Did you deal with John? If Hoban worked the crank, twice, the crank is not the problem. Could be clutch hub bearing? I have read that there have been lubrication and premature wear issues with the SE compensator; are you running one?
Not trying to beat a dead horse, but you do have plenty of clearance around the nose cone on the cam cover from the front head pipe. I had some trouble there with my F/C.
As stated above the clutch hub bearing should be looked at.
What motor mounts are you using? The new style mounts are real stiff and take some time to break in. The old style were much more forgiving though they didn't last as long and got mushy after a while. Do a search on them and you will find a lot of posts.
Not trying to be an ***. At this point I'd be wearing a doctors stethoscope I'd go to some deserted place where noise is not a factor and I'd be all over the bike listening through rpm bands to see if I can locate the area of the vibration. Couldn't tell from your post if you can duplicate problem in neutral or it only happens when riding. Typically something from the trans or engine contacting the frame as you know will cause this too.
Shaking like crazy at idle no good. Too bad you didn't have all that stuff magna fluxed when it was out. Just wondering if something could have developed a stress crack. I'm sure you went under the fairing and checked all those brackets that typicall crack right?
