Wheel has it right.
This thing floats in the cavity.
Must be centered --AS THE ENGINE IS TURNED THGHTEN THE BOLTS.
Simple as falling off a log. Do it right--Always do it right.

Shortcuts will leave you on the side of the road with a big repair bill to boot.

Pump and plate can be installed as a unit or separtely, your call. Once in place, remove two of the fasteners that secure the oil pump to the plate and loosen the other two; opposite corners of the bolt pattern. If you have the tapered alignment pins, use them in the opposiet corners where the fasteners were removed. If you don't have them, loosen all four fasteners and tighten two of them finger tight as you rotate the crank by rotating the rear wheel with trans in top gear. The pins are an alternative to the rotation approach but if you are a belt and suspenders type, use the alignment pins and the rotation method but you can use either/or; not necessary to use both.

If installing the pump and plate as an assembly, pay particular attention to the alignment/insertion of the oil pump scavenge pickup into the crank case scavenge port. Not rocket science but there is a proper way to go at it.

While you are in the cam chest, upgrade inner cam bearings, replace tensioners and install the Latus relief valve spring LRS-002, IIRC; $12 and well worth the trouble and cost in the early cam plates. Check those outer cam bearings as well.

So you didn't need to mess around with removing and aligning the oil pump? Is there a downside to this? I expect to swap my cam in a few weeks and was wondering why mess with the oil pump at all.

If you remove the oil pump, attached to the plate or separate from the plate, you still have to align the oil pump when you install it, whether attached to the plate or not. The pump gerotors center on the pinion shaft, if you remove the pump from the shaft, it requires realignment.

OK, thanks for the info. As pointed out earlier, the S&S video doesn't show loosening or aligning the oil pump so figured it could be bypassed.

you can leave them bolted on the new style but not the older ones. new style being the 06 dyna and 07 everthing else and newer. I just did my 2011 and it was simple to install it on the crank with the oil pump still bolted in place. Nothing to realign as it goes on exactly as it came off.

you are going to want to inspect your pump componets...I removed metallic slugde from my outer grear assemply. once you move the two sets of gears...you will not be ble to just slide it back into place with out the bove metioned alignment and check processes/

also, might as well install the intake screens while you have the plate out.
