Default Can you make a stock HD muffler louder?

I've decided to switch my all black exhaust back to chrome. I have the chrome heat shields and buddy just offered me a basically new set of slip-ons that he took off his Ultra Classic. Problem is, he took them off because they were too quiet. Ridiculously quiet. Is there any way to make these stock mufflers a little louder? When I look down the muffler I see a pipe that looks like the end was into cut four triangles and then bent over to close up the hole. If I drive something down in there an open up that pipe, do you think that will help let a little more sound through? Is there anything else I can do to turn up the volume? I don't mind springing for new mufflers but I've got some $$ obligations to take care of first, so it may be a long while before I have the cash. In the mean time I don't want to sound like a Gold Wing. Thanks.

not worth the hassle, look for a used set of slip on's can find pretty cheap.
you will end up destroying the stock mufflers and they won't sound that good when your done.

Newer mufflers have a cat in them as well as the baffle. I cut the baffle out of mine only to find out it was still too quiet. Also, the baffle in the sportster muffler was also attached to the cat somehow and wouldn't come out until I road for a few hundred miles and if broke loose. I'm now waiting till I have the money for a 2-into-1.

I think I failed to mention this is for a Road Glide, so no cat in muffler. The cat before the muffler is still in tact...for now. I'm a member of another forum and asked the same question of them. Got some really creative ways to get rid of the baffle. By and large most said they liked the sound...not really loud but respectable by HD standards. When $$ allows I think I'll swap in a whole new system...in the mean time I'm looking for a economical way not to be mistaken for a Gold Wing. Thanks folks.

Mine sounded like a cross between a Goldwing and a sewing machine. My stock mufflers made a loud thump when they hit the bottom of the dumpster! They are junk. I saved for a full system, but used slip ons are around for little $.

Default Louder Pipes

I took a 1" drill and drilled out my stock mufflers blocking baffle and it's defiantly louder. Runs fine and no problems. Try it. You got nothing to lose.

Well, took the plunge. Used a long screwdriver to open up the folds in the baffle, and then drove a .75" and then 1.5" pipe down through the middle of it. Not to hard of an operation. It will probably be next weekend before I can put them on, but they have to be louder than a GoldWing. If I ruined them, no big loss.

Update! Got off work early yesterday so jumped on the task of swapping mufflers. Got everything swapped out and wiped down, fired it up and ....blah. It's definitely (a little)louder than it was but not exactly what I was hoping for. It develops a little attitude when you lean on the throttle but I was hoping for a more authoritative, throaty sound through the full range. I can live with this a while till I can save up my allowance for something else, I guess. Hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained.
