Default Help - Timing on 1963 Flat head

Greetings,

Newmember - long time HD owner.

Working on 1963 Flat head and not sure about timing. Here is my issue:

Timing mark on fly wheel which is a groove, does not line up
whenall of the cam gear marks are lined. Is this correct?

The engine runs but not very smooth. Help!
Jesse

Jesse, gear timing is different from motor timing. Flywheel mark is used to time the motor; gears in cam case are timed to properly transmit engine power to the cam gears, crankcase breather, timer, oil pump and generator.

The groove on the flywheel is used to set up the spark timing and not the cam timing, the cams will need to have all their timing marks in line with the pinion drive gear marks.

Will not work on a Flathead 45. It's made for the aluminum inner primary of a big twin.

I would guess that you have servicar ..you have not change cam timing ?
so issue is ignition timing ? do you have original adjustable distributor ? adjustment in handlebar ? adjustment in distributor ?

Default Timing a '63 G 45" Flathead

Well, the motor would be at least from a servi-car. (if not still in it).

"G" series 45" flathead...Last year before the 1964 GE (electric start servi)
Yes 1 year before the 65 Pan..

(as was posted) your pinion gear only goes on one way, align all cam timing marks off the pinion gear mark. And close it up..

Then roll motor over till front valves just close & watch for flywheel mark to be coming into window. Then you may have to pull out the timer & reset it.... That's about it..

Don't worry about cam marks matching the flywheel mark.. As long as you have timed the scav. pump (breather) gear & pinion gear to the cams.

Do you have an intake leak ??? That will cause poor performance...
