Default tire rub with lowering kit.

since i've had my scooter an 01 electra glide, i've had avon venoms since the first set i bought and the 1 inch lowering kit. i had to put some tires on again but this time i went back to the dunlops. myselfand the wife rode over to the dealer and waited for them to do the job. finally at quiting time my scooter is ready. we leave the store and the first bump we hit the back tire is rubbing. crap....all the way home everybump we hit it rubbed. i tool it back, they looked the buke over, didn't see anythin, took it for a test ride(one person) and didn't find anything wrong. the wife and i are not small people so needless to say, they still found nothing wrong. they idea to fix the problem, 40 pounds of air in the shocks. it was rough but didn't rub till we hit the railroad tracks..........crap....! same thing. like said, i've had avons on it for 4 years and no problem.it didn't rub till the dunlops were installed. i guess my question is, do the dunlops stand taller than the avons. i've taken my lowering kit off but really like em.

At first pass I'd say no, b/c the stockers are Dunlops.

I have noticed differences slightly in widths between Dunlop-Metzeler-Avon, and there may be slight differences in height even with the same size rating, but not enough to make you hit the fender.

Possibly the Avon was worn down enough that it didn't rub with the lowering kit?

A quick way to see if you have the same height as before, is check your speedo. If there is/was a big delta between your old tires and new, it will show up on your speedo/odo. Try a marked mile.

How was the bike lowered initially? I'm curious if it was done with a bracket like Burly and it may have been installed incorrectly when the dealer changed the tire.

Think the shocks have bit the dust? If you and the Mrs. are sturdy people the shocks may need replacing. I ride mostly solo andhad to replace my rear shocks last summer.

How about posting the two tire sizes you used. This way we can look up the diameters on the respective sites and compare height.

hi puzzled, as far as i know i have the oem tires on, 16 mt90. i never specified changing the size. i think chops could be onto something as far as maybe the old avon was worn enough it didn't rub. i had the lowering kit and the low profile shocks and didn't have any problems. got rid of the low profile shocks long ago, rode like a tank. so i think either the dealer that install this new set of dunlops might have done something wrong, or something is going on with the swing arm bushings. i'm gonna get out to the garage tomorrow evening and check a few things. at this time, the lowering kit is off the bike. might disconnect the shocks and see if there is any play in the swingarm. thanks

Which way is the tire rubbing? On the sides or the top?

went back to the avons and no rub. put the lowering kit back on and i'm a happy man. go figure. all i can come up with is the avons absorb more of the road vibration and rides smoother. thanks to you guys for your input.

Iput the HD lowering kits on my Train. the rear are actually new shocks, revalved a little stiffer and lower by 1 1/2". Fronts are new internal fork springs.

no runbbing, no dragging, no chafing! haha

Yes, the Avon is smaller than Dunlop even though they're marked the same size. In fact, the Dunlop 402 is larger than their own 401 in the same marked size.
