As I previously commented, I have never sat on a bike and filled it up. Have always gotten off and to be honest, just haven't seen anyone sitting on a bike filling up in 4+ decades of riding (West Coast).

You noted that it is all in control of the nozzle, etc. Well, just this morning I stopped to fill up. I grabbed the nozzle and tilted it to insert into the gas tank and gas came flowing out all over the tank/bike. I had not yet squeezed the handle. That was a shock! What came out was gas that did not get pumped out. Not even sure how it could have happened even. I mean, the handle was not squeezed and the gas just came out (had to quickly tilt the nozzle up). If I had been sitting there, my crotch/pants would have been soaked in gas.

Just wanted to relay that I was controlling the nozzle and that didn't prevent an accident. I think I will continue with filling up while off the bike. LOL....

This is common here in the NE, so I stand to fill, and before I turn on the pump I invert it over the ground to let it drip dry. Once no drips then I insert the nozzle and top it off.

Plus standing helps my achy azz and back........

Getting off the bike, either paying or putting in the card, then sitting back on the bike to fuel? Or trying to pull up close enough to the pump to pull out your wallet while sitting, putting in the card while sitting, fumbling with the cap and hose while sitting, and fueling up? That makes zero sense. I've never even thought to do any of that.

Do that unless I am fueling my cage. I put premium in the bikes also so I want as little of the cheap stuff as possible. Yeah yeah...I'm sure it don't matter.
I even saw it in Oregon the one time I sat on the bike while the attendant handed me the nozzle. He dumped out whatever gas was still there on the ground.
Not so worried about the "spark" some people are. Also if you watch Myth Busters they tried the cell phone thing and it was busted!

One time I filled the bike up so damn much when I leaned to get back on the freeway, gas spilled out and went on the exhaust and my leg. So the gas spilling thing can happen away from the pump also.

Spilled gas on my pants/ ball sack as a kid. OMG!!! that burned w/o any flame. NEVER took that chance again
A gallon of gas = a couple sticks of dynamite in explosive power.

I don't care how people fill up. This debate is as silly as "do you get back in the car and sit and wait when you gas up." It's kind of pointless.

Subguy: I grew up in Silicon Valley (that would be West Coast for those who have never been here) and continue to work and live here. I ride very extensively (coastal routes, mountain routes, central valley routes, you name it) and commute to work on my SG daily, so it means I hit gas stations a lot. Although more people get off their bikes when filling up, but I'd always see bikers sitting while filling, too. I don't what part of West Coast you live in, but at least in the areas where I spend most of my time riding (NorCal, Central, and the Sierras), I do see "sitters" quite often.

I get up and stretch my old legs. I have a mustang vintage seat so I plop my helmet and gas cap on it, won't roll off and proceed to fill up.
