Default burning too much fuel

I normally get between 38-42 miles per gallon on my bike (2000 FXST-33K miles). Usually fill up when I've put around 160 miles on the tank and always have plenty left. Yesterday at 155 miles bike shut downs at about 80 MPH. Pull to the side check a few things then hit reserve and she started up. Rode about 4 or 5 miles to nearest gas station and ended up putting in 4.998 gallons. On the next tank I stopped at 100 miles filled the tank and ended up with 32 miles to the gallon. What do am I missing? Bike runs great, yesterday there was no head or tail wind. No mods done to bike except new tires (ME880s) pressure is on the mark in the tires. Not sure what else to check as to why my gas milage took such a dump on the last 2 tanks

No haven't added anything at all. It's a carb bike and the tank that I burned prior to running out of gas burned like normal.

Does your area require a ethanol blend for the summer?

To be honest I'm not sure if they add to the gas down here (Southern Louisiana) during the summer.

Did you check your plugs and wires? Are you riding it harder or faster? Alot of in town riding? Something had to change between those tank fills.

Changed the plugs and wires 1000 miles ago and have not had any problems. Ride mostly freeway between 70-80MPH. I checked plugs and wireslast night and they seem fine. I know I'm missing something (had the new tires on the 2 tanks prior to the change) Nothing else on the bike has been changed.
