Default Hip Replacment and riding

Hi after 35+ years of throwing my leg over a Harley and being an overweight Electrician I need a hip replacement. I can not even get on and off my bike. Last time I rode I had to crawl off it.

Has anyone had theirs done and still ride. My Dr says I should be able to ride again. I am worried because it my right hip. Either way I am not sure I can get on and off. Thanks for any help.

You should be just fine. We have a 65+ driver at work who had his done and was back driving a tandem tanker fuel truck within a couple months. He has to climb ladders and tanks pulling a 2" fuel line. He even walks straight up and down now, not leaned over anymore. Good luck.

Be of good cheer. You won't believe how much better you'll feel after it's done. And riding is so much more a pleasure than it was; I couldn't believe how many compensations I'd developed in order to continue to ride with my bum hip. I got the after-market part last summer.
My recovery was very fast; faster than most. I was pretty fit before the procedure, but I worked very hard during the physical therapy. You really have to do that. I was back in the gym within a week, and back on the bike within three weeks. Now I'm running, lifting weights, playing golf, and riding.
So don't worry about a thing. You'll really enjoy your new part:-).

It's going to be up to you.
You will have to do the PT and exercise's, they will work muscles that you probably haven't used for years.
And it hurts trying to make un-used muscles work when your old.
If you do it you'll sling that leg over,, if you don't you won't.

I've had both hips replaced, as well as revised. I'm going on 50. Let the bike be one of your motivators for stretching and exercising. The operations they are doing these days are healing quicker, especially if you get the procedure with the small scar. Myself, I look like a I was bit by a shark on either side and that procedure is more invasive as well as longer to heal, since they're cutting through the muscles and ligaments more. Just listen to the doc and the therapist and you should be good to go in a few months. And you will be surprised at how much better quality of life and every day chores are when fully healed.

Probably the best martial artist I know has had a hip replaced. This guy is my age, and has strength and flexibility I can only dream of.

Thank you everyone. I have been putting this off for way to long. I am in a lot of pain. I am 56 this Sat. First it was High blood pressure. Now I have to get all my Dental fixed. Other wise I am in pretty good shape. I walk a lot at work. I have had other surgeries so I am ready to hit the PT hard. I still am waiting for the Dr to schedule everything. I really appreciate everyone's replies.

I'm 69 yrs. and had my left hip replaced in "03. I've had numerous back, neck, elbow (nerve transposition), surgeries and I have to say that the hip was the quickest recovery and most successful of all. The only problem I had was that since it was the left, I had to put all my weight on that side to swing my leg over the bike (1-Ultra, 1 E.G. Std.). I was constantly rapping the leg on the sissy bar/back rest, and kicking the **** out of the right side saddle bag. I replaced everything with a LePera "Villain-2 up" seat. Problem solved! Keep the faith, you'll be back up in no time...
