It doesn't take that long to change out lifters, if you have adjustable push rods. Do you have stock push rods? If so ... just cut them and replace with Time Savers. Shop around though ... they can be salty, maybe 150.00. You can install them without taking the rocker boxes apart ... and they're adjustable. Then again ... if you dropped a valave guide or a retainer ... then you might as well do the whole top-end.
So there I was digging the answer (less $$$) and all of a sudden you had to throw that Top End stuff at me...(More $$$$)
Sigh...I was kind of hoping maybe it just got kind of hot and the hydraulics were floating a bubble or something...
How many miles you got on it? It will be easy sort of easy to figure out when you pull the push rod tubes off. What you're saying "could" be a lifter ... if your pushrods are adjustable ... could be that simple ... or it could be broken valve spring, valve guide or retainer. Is it more of a clacking or clatter sound ... or more of a hard banging like tapping a hammer on metal? In anycase ... if you had to end up changing the lifters ... and don't want to take the rocker boxes apart ... you'd have to cut the push rods (if you don't have adjustables) and then you can remove the lifter blocks and lifters.
When I went to load the bike on the truck to haul it off to my favorite mechanic, it made the noise for about 30 seconds then went away.
So I rode it to the shop, and the ticking kind of came lightly at various times but went away.
Then when I'm at the mechanics shop it is completely gone. He reved it way up and everything...nothing at all.

It ended up being the oil...I had put in 20-50W and my mechanic told me to switch to straight 50W and the ticking went completely away.
And the trans was overfilled. (Read the wrong manual) So he redid the fluid and it's fine. We adjusted the pushrods and it's perfect. I didn't know the oil made that much of a difference. Well, live and learn.
