Following up on this issue to close out. I visually checked the fluid level and it was just above the level indicated in this pic (clutch...basket?). I siphoned 2 ounces out with a Mityvac MV8000 (I had originally added the 38oz called for in the manual), and the fluid is now right at the level indicated. No issues with neutral thus far.

Glad you got it handled, you could use Crisco and it would work but too much Crisco and....

Yep, any oil between the plates will make them stick together/act like torque converter. Thus keeping the gears tight up against each other and causing multiple shifting problems.

I'm ignorant, so humor me.

Why then are we supposed to soak the plates in oil before install, if any oil between them is bad?

Not going to try to explain except that there is a difference between oil ON the plates and the plates sitting in oil. And if you are using the very same plates in a dry system, such as a belt drive, you do not soak them.
