Default 7 grand

Been watching used bikes for a first Harley (finally at 52). Not feeling the Sportster for some reason though a nicely bobbed variant is cool in a raw way. Recently missed a great 2002 or 4 (can't remember) Fat Boy, I should have at least made an offer. Also seen a couple of nice looking Dynas. I think I want an 88ci or larger (after market possibly), early 2000 for the year - guessing. Other than that, I don't know what is good. Fat Boys and Dynas appeal but I've seen some nice Road Kings and a Softtail. I get the feeling that there really isn't much difference and I should go for the look that speaks to me. Advice greatly appreciated - model and what I should expect to pay if I made a 'good' deal. I am mechanically competent, have tools (even a have a metal mill) and I am not scared away by less than perfect condition or a tip over. ALso, $7K is approximate.

Thanks again!

Before you go for the look, maybe you should sit on one and give it a ride. You seem to be all over the place and not sure what you want.

It's true, all over the place. Not so much that I don't know what I want, if I understood the nuances and differences, I could probably make a choice. Thought about test rides but I am buying used and probably 8 - 10 years old. Hmm, guess a dealer would have used bikes too... but it's cold. Will swing by Patriot next week.

Thanks.

$7k is plenty to spend on a great bike. Do not settle! You should be able to score a nice, low mile specimen in exactly the flavor you like.

You really need to take some test rides. Each model has its own character. I love Dynas but a Softail comes in as a close second. I like the bagger models but they are impractical at the moment.

It depends on what you plan to do with it - day trips - weekend trips - longer tours? Sporty performance in the twists or mellow cruising? I think in your area you must have some good twisties. As you learn more about what each model is good at - you will either nail it with what you buy or may end up regretting a hasty purchase.

Thanks for that Jesse. I am not too worried about making a wrong decision. If I buy well, I should be able to re-sell it at only a small loss (a grand or less). That wouldn't be too bad. Of course I would like to get it right the first time, and yes I will try to some.

Six, I like that. Even more stoked now - looks like I will find something that answers my call. Thanks for posting.

Cheers!

You will, just be patient, keep looking, and don't settle for anything less than what answers your call!

Patience!

I think for under $7000 you could find a good pre-2007 Dyna or Softail. Maybe look in the 2000-2006 low milage area. They'll be 88 CI engines if stock and most will be carbureted, though some are fuel injected.

For 7K in todays market with the glut of used bikes out there you should have a pretty good selection

Just a quick look at Craigs list in VA shows quite a few and with Winter here I would think that most that are wanting to sell will be willing to negotiate

05 Heritage less than 10K miles $7200

05 Superglide Custom less than 20K miles $6K

06 Streetbob 15K miles $5900

06 WG 27K miles $6500

08 Superglide custom less than 3K miles $7500

02 Fatboy 55oo mile $7800
