I have an 06 Fatboy with a hell of nick on the front fender (following too close to a gravel truck). I tried to match the custom color from the dealer "dragonfly green", but the paint kit doesn't do it. It looks like I can cover the nick with a front fender tip. I don't like the look of Harley's front tips for the Fatboy, so I went with National Cycle's tips.My concern is drilling into the sheet metal. I didn't give a damn on my metric cruiser when I installed my last "tips", but I don't want to screw up the paint job on this bike. Any suggestions on the best method to drill holes?
Thanks Silver, I was thinking of putting a block of wood between the tire and fender for added assurance and insurance. I was also afraid of bending the sheet metal when I drill. Usually not this **** retentive, but I "shiver" when I approach my bike with a tool in my hand.
tape it mark it and then use a springloaded center punch to start a small indentation for the pilot drill bit. then drill to size. with the tape still on prime the hole to get the inside edges of the hole.
I would paint the hole with any paint I happen to have in my garage cabinet. Whether it's primer or a paint color shouldn't make much difference since all you're doing is a litle rust prevention.

What they said about the tape and remember on a rounded surface even with a spring punch that bit is going to walk on you.
I'm going to add after tapingput on the fender tip make sure it lines up like you want it to, either tape it in place or have someone hold it anduse the holes in the tip foryour guide, this way you don't end up with holes that are off and have to be redrilled or enlarged.
