For those of us who actually ride, I completely agree. However, at every bike event I attend, I see a lot of 2 - 3 year old bikes with < 1,500 miles on the odometer.

Some how or another I feel like Harley may use this year to build a new Dyna frame. Just maybe they couldn't give full attention to two frames at the same time. Maybe 2017 was used to reinvent the softail frame, maybe 2018 will be used to reinvent the Dyna Frame. Also, and most important Maybe just Maybe I'm as full of crap as a Thanksgiving Turkey.

I just read somewhere that on average, all motorcycle riders average 2,500 miles per year.

That means about 500 miles per year ... not a whole lot.

It rode like a dream...now I understand while touring guys meant when they said they ride a couch...Power was great. I would need to see the need to do a stage 1 unless you wanted to.

Just my take on it
Well said buddy, you summed up exactly how I feel.

why do they need two completely different frames to build identically-sized bikes? no one seems to be able to answer that.

I've owned a Road King and an Electra Glide but don't really consider myself a Harley guy. Having said that, I'll volunteer to be the voice of dissent here and state I'm considering one of two '18 Harleys that I never gave a second look at previously. They are the Heritage Softail Classic and the Lowrider...

Harley changes their motors and looks every 17 years or so. People complained when they turn out the same thing year after year. People complain when the change things up. People complain when they introduce a new motor. People complain when the colors aren't the same as 10 years ago. People complain about the heat given off by Harley's. People complain when Harleys aren't as fast as other brands. People complain when their radio doesn't sound "just like" the concert they went to last night. People complain about the rising cost of Harley's. People complain about resale value. There's a common thread here that I can't put my finger on. If anyone can figure it let let us know about it.,,,

The common theme is drama, people like to complain. It baffles my mind that people think things can stay the same and the company will survive, not reality. If HD were to cater to the 65+ crowd the company will be gone before you can blink an eye.

Understanding that Harley must change to survive to me doesn't mean you completely abandon your bread and butter buyer from the past. For me they lost me back in 2010 when they did away with the FXSTC. Now I look for low/no mile's garage queens. But most of my buds that were still buying until 2016 have hit the brakes now.
Many of us aren't happy about the 2018, good luck selling to those kids I hope you have set up a way so they can text while driving your new line up.
