Shaving down the USB adapter didn't work. It's fairly thin plastic and the grind opened up a couple of holes exposing the PCB (printed circuit board). I've ordered another one. I've found a couple of grommets, but haven't decided which one yet, the one I have is most likely not going to work. This project would be done if not for the grommet.

Also, I would never leave a device attached over night, so not worried about battery.

Preliminary charging results on my phone are very positive. When the phone said it would take 9 mins to fully charge, it only took about 4. gopro test next.

I ran a SAE cable from the battery to my bars. I also ran the power cable for my Garmin GPS from a ignition on power source to my bars. Both are fused cables. I can plug the Battery Tender in at the bar while parked and switch to the USB adapter to charge my phone while riding. I ran the cables down the backbone while my tank was getting painted. Nice and easy to get to.

If you zoom in, you can see the GPS mount and the end of the SAE cable:

Bike turned off, gopro at 72%, charged to 95% in 25 minutes. Will be a good accessory.

I bought one of those USB chargers last week. It looked like a handy gadget.

Haven't installed it yet because, by nature... I'm a slacker.

Yeah no, I'd never stick something on my paint unless I didn't care about it. And as far as needing to have my phone available at a moments notice for answering calls, watching a movie maybe or even GPS while I'm riding, never gonna happen. But hey, it's a new day. For me a cell phone is a convenience device for emergencies when I ride not some kind of electronic umbilical that I can't be without. To each their own.

I like that marbled paint.

interesting thread! I just installed a usb charger from the battery to the handlebar so it can charge my phone/gps when on the RAM. also bought a 6 inch short black charging cable so it looks pretty invisible when using it.
for now it works as it should.

I care very much for my bike. I like to have the phone available for GPS and music, not calls. I could get the tape/glue off if I needed to, but I'm never selling it though so it's all good. Hell, every harley I've owned had boot scuff marks on the rear fender from potential buyers "trying it out" on the showroom floor. It pisses me off, but it didn't stop me from buying. Cheers, to each his own.
