Default Oil problem

hi all
i have a 48 with I my 4K miles on it
i saw my oil cap unscrewed where I parked it on Friday
I thought maybe it had popped up as I was riding it
i tried to start it today and it broke down with white smoke coming out of the air filter
I think somebody may have put something into the oil tank
if that’s so, would that cause the smoke and the oil lamp to come on?
I just had the bike serviced 2 months ago and it’s in my garage every night
Either way I getting it towed to Harley on Tuesday
I’m very upset as it’s my favourite bike
I would just like to know if anyone has any thoughts on if that could be the cause given the problems this morning
if so I hope the whole motor is not damaged as a result
Thanks for any input
Steven

If someone did screw with your bike, that wasn't very "Nice" of them.

Change the oil and see what happens-keep a bit for a sample in case you ever need it.

Ever now and then, they can kick back. Most of time popping in exhaust. But sometimes in intake and with a puff of white smoke.

What is on dip stick?

When I unscrewed the oil cap it seemed that it was oil in there as normal
and as far as I could see the levels were normal as well
i was thinking if something like a salt or sugar could have been added to the oil could that cause it?
Maybe im just being paranoid but it seemed strange the oil cover was popped up in the town and the next day I had these problems
also if something had been added, I would have ridden maybe 10 miles home so it would be in the wholes system by then
either way I should know later in the week when Harley have a look
ill let you guys know
hopefully my next tread is a happier one )))
by the way the 48 is the coolest city bike I have ever owned I also have a softail slim s
previouly I was riding a modified iron and a fat bob with a 110 screaming eagle upgrade
great rides as well!!!!

Yes it wasn’t very “nice” of them 😂
I live in Nice France for the past few year , and you would think it would be safe
just goes to show be careful wherever you park
other than that a great place to ride in the south of France

It is very unfortunate how easy it is for our bikes to be messed with. I hope yours will be okay.

This is where IMO a dry sump is very unhelpful as the only way to get the oil out is to split the crank case. The correct way entails running the engine or having it turn fast enough for the oil pump to scavenge the sump to get the oil back into the tank and if as you suspect someone has put something in the oil it is going to result in possible damage.

Also bear in mind that not all of the oil comes out on an oil change so the contaminate will remain.

If your 48 oil bag is anything like I had on my 2006 Sportster, there's no way that cap could have unscrewed on its own. If I remember correctly there is a little detent at the end of the cap rotation that sort of locks the cap in place at the tightest point. I remember having to use a wrench at times to get mine off, just for added leverage since my hands were oily but it certainly wasn't something my fingers were capable of doing.

My guess is you are paranoid and sadly getting ready to be screwed by a dealer unless he is 95% more honest then the rest.
Nothing what you described about a pop in the intake would have come from that.
Unless I missed something since you implyed it ran home OK.
Mine has popped thru the intake numerous times especially as battery gets old or terminals get loose. Cool weather is guaranteed to produce loud bangs in exhaust.
Nature of the beast. Long stroke 2 cylinder..
