The first week of May I traded in my 2015 ultra limited for a new street glide special. While one of the service advisors was giving me the mandated walk around on my new bike he stated that just in the previous couple of months Harley had started denying lots of warranty claims. The dealership had received no information from headquarters that this was going to happen or why. He just told me to be cautious about putting any aftermarket parts on my bike. Since that initial discussion I talked with a guy the had a new 2019 street glide special and the factory had canceled his warranty and his extended warranty that he had purchased because he put on a pair of Rhinehart slip on mufflers. This got me doing some research and I discovered a consent decree in a lawsuit the EPA filed against Harley Davidson.I downloaded the 33 page decree and spent a while reading it all. I won't go into a lot of deatil as anybody can just search on "Harley consent decree" and download a copy. To summarize The EPA accused Harley Davidson of selling off road / competition tuners knowing they were being used on street motorcycles. The EPA said this went back to 2008. Harley denies this accusation. In any case in the consent decree Harley agreed to buy back and destroy any tuners still held by dealers. Also in the consent decree Harley agreed to cancel the warranty on any 2017 - 2020 motorcycle that had their tuning changed by any tuner not approved by the California Air Resources Board. The decree does not say aftermarket parts cannot be used it just says don't used an unapproved tuner. From what I can find out it appears that Harley has gone above and beyond that and is canceling the warranty on ant bike that has any aftermarket performance parts. The only acceptable parts are Screaming Eagle parts and those parts must be installed by a Harley dealer. Ryan Urlacher, owner of the website Law abiding Biker.com, put out a free informational video on this a couple of weeks ago. All this leads up to my question, has anybody had their warranty canceled and has anybody been able to get away with installing aftermarket mufflers themselves?
Your post is about the 3,382nd post on the issue. The strict interpretation includes any non EPA compliant parts including exhaust. Not all dealers comply to this strict enforcement.
Mine was cancelled. It was after my warranty expired though so it really doesn't matter. I had a sit down with the sevice manager regarding an ongoing ignition issue I have been having since the bike was new. He showed me when running my VIN it shows up flagged due to "vehicle modifications". He told me when they plug your bike up for anything if it reads an aftermarket fuel mapping that's not compliant it sends a notice to the MoCo and they flag your vin. Like I said it didn't matter to me as my warranty expired 3 years ago but it was good information to have for future purchases
Slip ons would not void the warranty unless they did a complete kit, and changed the tuner to a non-screaming eagle tuner. The guy mentioned in your paragraph either changed to a non SE tuner, removed the cat, or did some other performance altering change; which HD determined directly resulted in a malfunction/defect.
