Default Heat and Helmets

Taking a day long trip on Sunday probably doing about 250 miles with a fair amount of interstate travel. I normally wear a full face on the interstate, but with construction constantly going on around Atlanta, I'm a little concerned about getting stuck in traffic wearing that sucker and really baking. It's fine as along as I'm moving, but get stopped, and it does get hot even with the face shield up. I like wearing a full face but I may go with the half as a concession to the heat. I do have a windshield to deflect road debris. The heat has just been brutal here. [sm=badbadbad.gif]

It gets hot even here in Michigan. I ride the expressway at 70+and I like something across my face. I have chipped up enough glasses. But that same road often becomes a parking lot. I got a HJC 3/4 helmet model AC-3 with the optional flip up face shield. I love it. (Once I got the HJC logo off the front.) You can ride with the sheild up, down or in between.

I have a Road King with windshield and use my 3/4 or 1/2 all the time. I don't like the full face.
I use a good pair of tight fitting sunglasses (day time) or clear glasses (nighttime) for eye protection. Being in S Calif we have the heat and only a few times in the "winter" do I need to use a wool scarf as a neck wrap to keep a little warmer.
If I were you, I would use the 1/2 with glasses most of the time.
Enjoy your ride.

I use my full face all the time, since I want to keep my jaw if I go down.

You know, I said I wouldn't do that for interstate travel, but with the extreme heat we're having, that's probably what I'm going to do. I already ride around town in the half.

Just curious, but does anyone know the odds/stats for a motorcyclist having an accident? Would love to know that and particularly a breakdown of say cruisers/tourers vs. sportbikes.

That's been my thinking too. I've seen some full face helmets after people have been down and you do tend to take it on the chin. What temps are you riding in with it?

I sometimes wear a Nolan N-41 3/4 Helmet on the highway - No problem staying cool and well protected.Without a fairing or windshield is nice to have the 3/4 for long trips.

Have fun,ride safe !

Call me crazy, but I wear my MX helmet when riding. Gives the protection of a full face, but still allows for air circulation to give that open face feel. Also, it's lighter (fiberglass/kevlar) than any "street type" full face helmet I've checked out.
Plus the visor really helps with the Texas sun.
I have made many trips down the interstate at 70-85mph and have no problems with the wind grabbing the visor, even when passing 18 wheelers. But mine is the newer type with the vents on the visor, but really, no problems as far as the "head whip" is concerned.
For eye protection I wear the ESS Ballistic goggles that we were issued prior to going the Iraq, so the rocks, sand and "Texas size" grasshoppers don't present a problem. And even with the recent rain we had doen here, I never had a problem with them fogging up.
Got alot of funny looks at first, but now on one gives me a second glance. But, I did paint it black, so that helps with the "look".

Just a thought to the helmet vs heat vs protection issue.
