I went all brass everywhere. A few brass bolts for small things, but as others have mentioned, nothing requiring strength. For all engine bolts I used brass bolts covers made from bullet cases.
That seems like a pretty cool idea! And, if you left the primer out of the bullet casing, you could still get the bolts on/off easily.
As for the regular brass tarnishing, I'm sure if you put a clear coat over the brass, like a spray clear polyurethane, it would keep it's shiny color for a long time. Same would go for the bullet casings, though, you'd want to coat them too, or they'll tarnish as well.
I always replace my exhaust manifold nuts with brass nuts. And use a little copper grease on them. You really don't want the regular steel nuts seizing onto the steel exhaust studs....
