Let's see - guess we have heard something on this subject from just about every angle. But I wanted to join in on the fun! Since I have been a Harley owner since March, I'm qualified to respond. Ive wanted a motorcycle since the day I snuck a spare key out and rode my friends Honda 70 in junior high. I was a big Evel Knievel fan as a kid (now there was an Ambassador). Ever since I was a young adult I thought it would be awesome experience to be a Harley owner one day....finally paid off credit cards at age 45 so I could get my own. So to respond -

1) I am not an ambassador but make it worth my time and I'll do it!
2) I work for a non profit and get to play "exec" during the day, when I ride on my time I AM ME!
3) I only wear leather for protection and a Harley shirt if I'm on my Harley
4) I have have no ink (can't think of what I want permanently on my body!)
5) I have friends from all spectrums and I have to say I pick them because they are genuine!
6) I wave at all on two wheels cause one day I might need their help!!! Plus it could always be the last nice thing I did before some idiot cager kills me!
7) I love the wind in my face
8) I enjoy talking about my Harley and rding but not to the point of boring someone to death
9) I try to live a well rounded life so if I could never ride again , it wouldn't ruin the rest of my life.

Thanks for the forum and learning all about everything that is Harley including meeting some really great people! Oh snd befor I forget, Why do they bury lawyer 20 feet down as opposed to the normal 6ft? Because deep down, they're really good people! Time to ride!

Damn,

Where did Hammertime go

If it wasn't for scumbags and convicts I wouldn 't have a job (j/k guys). I've ridden a harley longer than I've been a LEO and I didn't change when I got my job. I've been to Sturgis and Daytona prior to it turning into a Yuppie hangout. I owned an AMF Harley and hung out at the dealer prior to the popularity craze. I've been refused a hotel room (now I get a government discount). The only thing that has changed is that you don't have to rebuild your bike every winter.

Going by looks I guess folks would put me in the scum bag catagory, ink, long hair, usually unshaven..etc. Always pretty much had the same look, except the couple of years in the Navy, do not give a sh-- what people really think.

Just thought I would throw this out there, about the Image of harleys and riders, we need to portray the other side of harley riders also, we are not all excons and scumbags. Alot of us are Doctors and Lawyers and businessmen. Yes ,we like to dress up like bad boys with straight pipes and tear around town and go to the rallys . I just wanted to say that we need to remember we are ambassadors for harley and lets try to be a little more professional to the general public and other riders no matter if it is a rice grinder, I always wave to other riders no matter what they ride, I too rode others in my youth not all can sell the family farm to afford a harley or be in debt up to their eyeballs. Be the ambassador harley wants you to be. just a thought..
Some how I think Hammertime was misunderstood. Maybe he could have worded his post a little different. I think we all are, like it or not, Ambassadors for Harley. Not the MoCo but the Harley Nation. When my son comes home on leave and we get to ride together, he on his crotch rocket, me on my Sporty, we encounter people of all types. Those on Harleys are in two groups. One group welcomes us, waves to us, stops and talks to us and generally welcomes us. The other group is split into two groups within its self. Part of group two will not wave to HIM, speak to HIM, or most times even acknowledge HIM. The other portion of group two ignore US, will not wave to US, etc. My problem with either group is they give us ALL a bad reputation of being Arrogant Harley Owners. A group my son calls A-HO's. I think what hammer was speaking to is, we represent us, what I call the Harley Nation. Most of you know my son is a Marine, on his way BACK to Iraq, he will tell yopu in a minute, he represents us all, scumbag, dirtbag, lawyer, doctor, bluecollar, etc. You all must admit that there has been in the past the stereotype of the Harley rider as being less than a desirable person. Today that Stereotype is becoming more towards the RUB. I think today more than anytime in the past, the cross section of Harley riders cuts a large swath scross society in general.

Like to dress up like bad boys?

Ambassadors?

this is why it's getting embarrassing to ride a harley. If you ride anything newer than a 2000 people assume you're one of the losers described in that post.
I'm NOT an ambassador for HD. I won't even buy an HD shirt anymore because of all the instant 'dress up' bad asses buying their images. Yuck. I puked in my mouth when i read that post.

I can remember the day when you did'nt want to be seen at a Harley dealer, they were always full of convicts and scumbags.Hey come to think of it when AMF owned Harley convicts and scumbags were the only ones who would buy a harley..... .
Maybe were you come from. I put a down payment on a sportster (AMF) when I left for Nam in '70 and had it when I returned. I sure as hell didn't consider myself or any one that hung around the local Harley dealership a scum bag and can't say that I remember any of them being convicts either. As for now I'll hang out were I want, wear what I want and don't give a rats a$$ what anyone thinks.
