Legally, you have violated the law if you pull up alongside in the same lane, regardless of the position of the other motorcycle. A motorcycle is entitled to the full use of a lane.

There are many reasons a biker may be in a certain lane postion. At a stop sign with a crosswalk, you should position youself so that when you take off you are not driving on the painted surfaces, which may have less traction.

Realisticty? It's nice to see a fellow rider and be able to pull up and say, "Hey, nice bike."

Reminds me of the old joke from the mid 70's. A BMW rider pulls up to a Harley at a stop sign, looks over and says, "Hey, you know what BMW stands for? Bad Man's Wheels!" and speeds off.

The Harley rider catches him at the next light, looks over and says, "Hey, you know what AMF stands for? Adios, M*****F***** !"

It's pretty much a rule of thumb...If a rider does not want company, you go to the center. On the left or right you're open to lane sharing.

No your'e not! My lane is my lane! No matter where I am IN it!!
Lane-sharing is legal here in Cali pal. If you're here and not in the middle, another bike will pull up next to you. That's why we have our little rules, like taking the center if you don't want company.

I pull up next to them if they're left or right in the lane and nod or say hi. When it's time to go... I hesitate a sec to let them start off first and then I start off slower than they did. If they're in the middle of the lane, I stagger to one side a little behind.
Same here. I will at times come up along side (provided they are in the left or right lane track) and say hello....nice day to ride....whatever. But when the light turns green, I let them ride on. If they are centered in the lane? I stay back.

Don't think I would do that however if the guy was sportin colors, although it is not often you see patched riders riding solo. They tend to view respect a bit more seriously than your average rider, and I wouldn't want to inadvertently **** anybody off.

Legally, you have NOT violated the law here in Cali.

I pull up and say hi. I always let them take off first though if it is a single lane. Sometimes they respond, others they don't. I figure make the most of life...

You know what pisses me of about stop lights, is that alot of times my bike is not heavy enough to trigger them to change. I usually wait for a little bit then go when its clear. What do you guys do? I think its a law that after a cycle of lights and your light doesnt change then it is legal for a motorcyclist to go.

They just passed that law in NC. Don't remember the details though. I think it is two lights or a certain number of minutes.

It's not the weight of your bike but the amount of metal. get a magnet and put it on the bottom and supposedly this will help. I have not tryed this yet...
