Legally, you have violated the law if you pull up alongside in the same lane, regardless of the position of the other motorcycle. A motorcycle is entitled to the full use of a lane.
Legally, you have NOT violated the law here in Cali.
Thank you. Here it is, by gosh, from the California code !
[*]Allow the motorcycle a full lane width. Although it is not illegal to share lanes with motorcycles, it is unsafe.

At least I was able to find it in English!

So that's why we share lanes here. BTW, I don't think we need the foreign language versions! (anyone here speak punjabi?!)

And the magnet thing DOES work! Especially when you line up over the underground sensor.

Guess it all depends on where your at and how you feel with your riding skill. Live in CA where lane sharing is permitted by law. When I pull up to a stop light/sign, I could care less if some other scooter rides up next to me, as long asthey have the courtesy to let me go first. I in return have no problem pulling up to someone either, say hello, nice bike and when the light changes allowing themto leave the line first. I have never worried about the other riders ability, only mine, I leave enough space so that I don't have to make an "emergency manuever." Remember, sharing a lane doesn't mean you have to be like Ponch and John riding side by side, leave yourself a safe following distance and enjoy the ride with that "STRANGER" who is sharing the same passion as you. I ride 60 miles a day to work and just about every morning hook up with some stranger, safety in numbers. If I meet up with some rider that I think is going to compromise my safety, I pull back, change lanes and "ride my own ride", it all comes down to attitude "Live to Ride...Ride to Live" Just my 2 pennies....

I pull up next to them if they're left or right in the lane and nod or say hi. When it's time to go... I hesitate a sec to let them start off first and then I start off slower than they did. If they're in the middle of the lane, I stagger to one side a little behind.
Same here. I will at times come up along side (provided they are in the left or right lane track) and say hello....nice day to ride....whatever. But when the light turns green, I let them ride on. If they are centered in the lane? I stay back.

Don't think I would do that however if the guy was sportin colors, although it is not often you see patched riders riding solo. They tend to view respect a bit more seriously than your average rider, and I wouldn't want to inadvertently **** anybody off.
Exactly my thoughts.

Its a split vote for me: I dont pull up beside them, but I dont mind when others do if I'm there first.

It is a serious question. I know everyone has a different take. Myself, I think a rider should do as I do, stagger the lane and stay back at least a length. This is forsomeone you dont know. If its a ridin bud, I really dont mind.

I dont know about the middle of the lane in your area, but here in Illinois, it tends to be slippery sometimes as thats where all the engine oil and junk drips off. I try to stay away from the center of the lane.

Well,

Left-right-middle....."rules".....wtf........every stop is different.....what "rules"........if I'm goin' straight through an intersection and I'm in the outside lane, I usually stop in the right-hand tire track closest to the corner. That's to protect "my" lane so some dipstick in a cage can't try to make a right-on-red and squeeze by me like they always want to do if I'm over in the middle of the lane. It's still MY lane even though I'm not stopped in "the middle".........that's what I think about it anyway...............

And you got serious answers. There are some that go with the rule of pulling left or right to share, and center to ride alone. And there are some who feel they own the lane no matter.
