How fast?
What were the traffic conditions?
Did you complete the MSF Course?
How long have you been riding
What kind of helmet did you have?
What Outerwear (Leather, Etc.)
Weather Conditions?
Illumination characteristics?
... .. ..... ........
Letâs analyze this...
Safety is a personal thing until it hurts others. If by you not adhearing to safety rules cost us more in insurance cost, then yea its a public matter. And as a whole, the biker group can get more done than standing alone. WE can walk away and never look back at our brother or we can realize 4600 of our brothers dies every year and almost 23000 get injured. We could put a stop to a lot of this needless carnage by educating bikers and using safety gear.
But once passed, helmets laws are probably the most obeyed laws in the country. Simply because a violation is so visible. And it's not like you can come up with a good excuse like you can with a seatbelt. "sorry officer, I forgot to put my helmet on" doesn't work too well. So very little enforcement is needed.
Personally I'd wear one even if it wasn't the law. Not because of the arguments that it could save my life or save society a bunch of money. The only argument that matters to me is the one that not wearing one could increase the chances of my family having to care for a brain injured vegetable for the next 30 years or however long I live.
This number by far exceeds the number of cases involving motorcycle operators, and by sheer numbers the resulting medical costs is much higher for victoms of car/truck related accidents.
But even so, I don't know of any consumer safety organization pushing for mandatory helmet laws for operators of any motor vehicles other than motorcycles. Why is that?
Maybe it is just the area in which I live, but I see very few (if any) people in cars and trucks wearing a helmet for their own safety and consideration of their family, or to save society a bunch of money if they are involved in an accident.
Makes you wonder.....

If you check statistics I believe you will find that the majority deaths to individuals in cars and trucks is caused by blunt force head trauma. And I'm sure the number of people with brain injury while involved in an accident(and living in a 'vegetable state') is very, very high.

Were I to be brain damaged in a car accident my children or wife are not going to be asking "why wasn't dad wearing a helmet?". But such would not be the case were the same to happen while I was riding.
Iwas not suggesting that you should wear one. I wasmerely stating my personal reasons for wearing a helmet.
Some good safety stuff here. Cant get enough of that in my opinion. How about a "Safe riding" forum within HDForums.com? But thats my opinion....and you know what they say about opinions.
