trailering bikes
Well, I just have to ask how many of you have hauled your bikes in a U=Haul trailer? I have a great open trailer that I use in the summer from Adventure Sports, but don't have any buddies with an enclosed trailer. The salt spray my bike would be subject to is unthinkable. Thinking of going south since this friggin winter is lasting forever, and wondered if I could get by with drilling a few holes in the floor of a U-Haul to mount a wheel chock. I think they have plenty of tie down points in them, and I suppose filling in the holes before I took the trailer back would be a good idea. Just wondered if anyone has done this. Thanks!

I've had several experiences with moving using uhaul--trucks, not trailers--and their lack of maintenance and upkeep leads me to believe that they couldn't care less what you did to their stuff. For instance, they once rented me a truck with a flat tire on the passengers side. They aired it up right before handing me the keys in hopes that I would get out of town before it went flat again so it would be the headache of the next uhaul guy down the road to fix.

I have used a U-Haul enclosed trailer to haul a bike in the past. It works. I didn't make any alterations to the trailer, just made sure to secure the bike as best as I could.

I've rented a trailer in the past to haul my bike in the winter and bolted my wheel chock to a piece of 3/4" plywood and screwed that to the wood floor of the trailer.....they didn't care.

I've used something like this several times. You can pick up scrap 4x4's at a construction site, anchor them to the plywood, screw the plywood to the floor. It worked from FL to MN with no problems.

Have you priced the uhaul trailers? Depending on how far you want to go, they charge 500 bucks to rent a trailer each way from Illinois to Florida. I found some trailer manufactuers in Georgia that you can buy direct and save 40% on what they charge up here for a brand new one. I decided to put my bike on my truck and drive to Georgia and buy the trailer, then load it in the trailer.Worst case I can alwayssell it and recoup my money... PM me if you would like any info.

i have used like deck screws and fastened 2x4s to the wood floor to crib it on both sides of tires than added a couple of short pieces across the front and back of the tires the hard part was finding a point of attachment to pull the straps from..didnt want to drill any large holes for eyebolts..i have heard some u-hauls wont rent to you if they know your putting a vehicle carring gas in it for insurance purposes

Some of the trailers up here have aluminum floors. I don't like that, especially if the bike is rolling down a wet/snow/ice driveway. Wet tires plus that floor = skating rink. I would definately screw down a bunch of boards to the trailer floor.

No but when I'm done working in SC i will be renting one to get my X-Bones back to Texi-azz.

if you are in IL i have a great trailer rental place you can use... we rent from them all the time... just to give you an idea, they rent me a 24ft flat trailer with elec brakes and all and 6 wheel chucks for 200 bucks for 10 days... not bad at all!
