Since alot more people post here I decided to enter my tip for today in this section rather than the exhaust section. I recieved my black Fat Cat exhaust and not wanting to scratch or otherwise mar the finish during installation I decided to wrap the pipe with 3Mpainters tape (the blue stuff you get at home depot etc.) This tape is designed to come off without lifting the paint when you remove it. Well after sucessfully installing the pipeI removed the tape and you guessed it, the paint came off the pipe right to the bare metalgrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Hope this saves someone else from making the same mistake.............BG
Man, I would be calling the manufacturer immediately if not sooner. That ain't right. Something that is supposed to stand up to heat and the environment should not come off with painters tape. No way no how.
Coastrider, I think the problem is that the paint needs to be cured before it will properly adhere to the pipe and that is done when the engine is run and the heat cures the paint or I could have put the pipe in the oven for an hour and risked bodily injury from the wife. I just didnt think this through before I started and now I got to repaint the pipe. No biggie but if I can keep someone else from making the same mistake then all is not lost..................BG
deadman77, you are right about the paint needing to be cured. In the directions that come with the pipe it only states that if the pipe needs to be touched up you should use Krylon special purpose 1200 degree paint but no mention of it needing to be cured but on the paint can it recommends curing. Live and learn I guess.................BG
For what its worth, I used BBQ paint on my Kerker header for my 900 Kawasaki.
It held up great. Procedure was to paint, heat it with the engine and then a quick wipe with a rag. That left a very nice semi gloss finish that held up very well to the old crotch rocket.
They still should have told you to heat it to cure.

I had the same "blue tape" problem after doing some touch up painting in my new home. Taped up and trimmed around 3 doorways, pulled off tape and paint right down to the drywall!!!

i recently installed my black d&d fat cat exhaust and was surprised it's not ceramic coated, simply painted in hitemp black.
i did tape it up to install it and do some other things to it but was lucky and no paint came off.
nonetheless, it's a fantastic exhaust, performs as described and it looks terrific. even though i got it with the quiet baffle, it's still loud at idle and it SCREAMS! when i get on the gass and has a nice rat-a-tat-tat on decel,
but it's got a great rpm range where it's so stealth i can hear the valves and motor in addition to a nice exhaust note- SWEET!
