Florida-Texas Route Recommendations
In Mississippi - US90 along coast? Hop on I-10 just east of I-59 to get into Louisiana?
In Louisiana - Don't really see a good route to go west on. Take I-12 to I-10. Suggestions to get me into Texas that mabe a little more scenic with good roads.
In Texas - US90 to US290 into Austin looks pretty good?
Any suggestions from locals would be greatly appreciated.
Hated those LA roads, though. What's up with the 'speed bumps' in the highway? [:-]
Cut south from Tallahassee and pick up Hwy 98 along the coast. Really gorgeous drive, though it can be slow going through Panama City and Destin. Once through Pensacola, you can either go south and pick up Gulf Beach Highway (stop off for a beverage at the Flora-Bama) or continue on Hwy 98 for a nice county drive. Two ways around Mobile Bay - head up north to I-10 or keep hugging the coast out to Dauphin Island and take the ferry across to Bayou la Batre. I recc the ferry; costs about $6 a bike. Then there's all kinds of speedy country roads through AL and MS, though I'd adivse just taking I-10 through LA. The backroads in Louisiana tend to suck.
Alot of good restaurants in Apalachicola. Gibson Inn or Chef Eddie's Magnolia Grill.
Just west of Panama City, take 30A through Seaside and Grayton Beach. Not out of the way as it ends up back on 98. You'll pass by Criolla's Restaurant one of Florida's best.
At Navaare, take the bridge over to the island and run along the beach, again it's not out of the way as you will end up on the Pensacola Bay Bridge when you rejoin 98.
and like Uncle Fester said, definitely stop at the Flora-Bama (Jimmy wrote a song about it no less)

You can acutally take 190 all the way to just North of Austin. The last time I drove 190 duringhurricane Rita (rescue mission during the hurricane and did not want to get on I-10 with high winds)it was in good shape and not much traffic after B.R. to the state line. As you know, plan on much more time taking these routes, but if time is tight you will have to jump on I-10 which is not far from I-10 or I-12.
I do take the hwy 22/90 route quite often to go to the Gulf Coast so I know these roads are in good shape (I live at the junction on I-55 and I-10 but don't like to travel interstates unless I have to, I do take I-12 to Slidell some times and expect a lot of truck traffic ,be careful especially aroung Covington, have seen some pretty bad accidents around that area). The only problem may be they are re-doing hwy 90 in the Bay St. Louis, Gulfport, Bolixi area, but I have not had any long delays, but they do restrict travel to one lane each way. Traffic does get a little heavier during work hour traffic morning and afternoon.
Hope this helps and if you have any questions about the S/E Louisiana area I'll be happy to help if I can.
