I use them esp on long rides. I know that if I ride all day w/o them I'll be hearing that engine noise in my head for at least an hour after I stop riding. That can't be good.
A good case of Tinnitus (ringing in the ears) that never goes away and 50% hearing loss, and you will reconsider ear plugs. My problems are from artillery, but you could do the same damage from wind noise. Nothing is worse than laying in bed hearing ringing that never, evergoes away. Wife thinks that is why I am a little crazy.
I developed tinnitus a few years ago - it first came on after a 2500 mile ride on my old sporty with drag pipes - it never goes away and sucks more than you can imagine....always wear ear plugs now. Sorta like closing the barn door after the horses get out but you gotta preserve whatever hearing you got left....
Earplugs for what?
Old school here.
Ears are shot anyway. Poor excuse, will probably get worse.
My bike sounds SWEEEET!!!!!!!!!!!
Better than my old 900 at 9000RPM
Wear plugs all the time. At work from the time I walk through the door till I go home, anything at home that is louder than normal conversation, what ever, plugs are in. Best bet is to find something that is comfortable. Foam plugs are better than nothing. Tinnitus sucks the big one. Been living with it since my service days and it gets a little worse each year. Can't hardly hear the crickets anymore and I have to have people talk directly towards me so that I can understand them. White noise just to get to sleep. Had a hearing test couple days ago at work. Have to go back in 21 days to be retested because the right side had a big loss. IIR correctly from the poster at work the wind noise for motorcycle is something like 110db and permanent hearing loss starts at 85db(time weighted at 1hr I believe). Yeah, only 46 so I have a lot of years(hopefully) of that GD buzzing in the ears.
Wear them everytime I get on a bike, even wearing a fullface. They cut out background noise and wind, but still allow you to hear enough to be aware of your bike and surroundings. I couldnt live without em

GeorgiaBiker; you describe my symtoms exactly. I am not a militaryveteran but I've been riding since I was twelve years old and I'm now fifty-six years old.For the last eight or so years I will not ride without custom fitted earpieces and a Snell approved helmet. Unlike some other injuries, hearing loss is gradual in most cases and not until its too late do people realize how precious their hearing is. My recomendation to anyone that rides is to ride with high quality earplugs *all* the time; not just long trips/rides. Happy motorin'!
