Have you priced the bike kits? What a rip. They're close to a RKC price, and it's a blvd bobber that's in a thousand pieces, and would probably make you **** blood in a week cuz of the sh!tty ride. If you look at it from that perspective, HD isn't that bad of a deal.
The fun factor in a car is just about ZERO. The fun factor on a bike is high and on a H-D is in the stratosphere. The H-D may cost a few grand more than the competition but the cost of a shrink is ALOT more expensive still.
At the time, in June 2005, it was killing me to pay 13,000 for my Superglide, even with the 1K of dealer accessories thrown in. I have have over 20K in her now.
And....I'll probably buy another someday.
Still think they cost too damn much.....but it's what I like so I deal with it.
Kinda "joes'n" for a bagger right now.....REALLY want an '09 RK .....
$17 Grand? I wish I only had that in my ride. How about close to $30. Of course they're overpriced. Compared to a car, they're really overpriced. But with a Tahoe, and full size GMC pickup in the garage, I've got to have something that gets good gas mileage. That's the only reason I have one. The GREAT MILEAGE!!! Come on now, get creative.... All three are paid for, so I'm thinking it's a new car before it's a new bike next on the radar screen.
Look at how much metal, rubber, etc. is in a 2008 Cessna 172 and try to justify the $180,000 price tag. The Harley is a bargain!
A bargain is $14,000 for a Hayabusa or possibly $12,600 for an M109R. The only Harley that's a bargain is a Sportster and even that would be model specific as some of them, like the Nightster, Iron and XR1200 are no bargain at all for what you are getting.
Take a new car you spend 25000 for in 2009. Four years later it's worth 10000. if you are lucky. Buy a new HD for 20k and I bet it's still worth 15000 four years later as long as you haven't dogged it.
Plus the bike is a hell of alot more fun!
NOt true at all. You wouldn't get anywhere near 15000 dollars.
Some cars hold their values a lot better than others. Honda and VW's are known for keeping thier value well. I had an Infiniti FX 45 that I paid 42k for. Two 1/2 years later I sold it for 31k.
The question is an HD worth the 17 to 22k you must pay. No. A Harley is overpriced by what you get. Most riders add 500.00 for pipes, 100.00 for an air cleaner. Others add even more for motor work. All of this just to get the bike to where it should be when sold. 65 HP stock? Little, if any, factory warranty. Horrible customer service.
Yes I paid $19,000 for my last HD and thought is was overpriced. I paid $2,000 for my first HD in 78. What has really changed since 1978 is the attitude (and it scares me how much I am reading on these boards) that these lemmings will pay "anything" to own a piece of the Hog.

My 09 FLSTC cost the same as my wifes car did. Having said that, no regrets here at all. Wife's car is the money maker, my truck for utility, and the bike is for fun. That is what we work for.......to have fun and enjoy life, and that is what our Harley represents. Kinda hard to put a price tag on the experiences and memories we have made since hoppin' on a Harley.
