We went car shopping today for the wife. Was looking in the 17,000 to 18,000 range. She asked me what I thought of this one I said yours is a 03 and paid off and runs good why are we here? She replied very loudly "I spent 17,000 of a fudging motorcycle I can spend that on a car so shut up."
Now don't get me wrong she loves the bike but it made me think. I'm standing here looking at this big 4 wheel car with lots of metal and gadgetry for the same price or less that what I spent on my 2 wheel shiny thing that you can't ride in all weather conditions. Is it really worth it?
Why do we spend so much money on these things. Don't get me wrong, I love it and would do it again. But is there really 17,000 dollars worth of steel, rubber, paint, and chrome in these things?
My question really is do you think Harleys are overpriced or are we buying the name the harley mystic? I don't know.......but we do.
Very much so , especially considering somewhat lack of warranty support. Not to mention HP for the cubic inch size. I'm done buying new , the 07 Ultra will be the last I buy new.Rest will be kits/custom frames.
Considering what else is out there and the price of those bikes, mostly no, HD is in the ballpark. There are certain models that are higher than they should be, but others are a great price compared to the competition.
They're in the ballpark as said above. They sure aren't cheap but they're not too far out of line compared to the other bikes out there and I'll tell you what the quality/fit/finish of H-D is far superior. The others are mostly plastic and their paint doesnt even come close to H-D.
I log ALOT of miles every year and believe me if I didn't think H-D was a quality/dependable machine I wouldnt go near one - I can't afford to be fixing things all the time so a pretty bike that's not dependable is useless to me. I ride year around and my bike is my primary transportation to the tune of 30k a year. My '05 EGC never let me down, started and got me from A to Z every time I asked it too and it was a wonderful machine - 100% reliable and a sheer joy to own/ride day in and day out.
That bike got totalled in November by a hit n run driver who rear-ended me on the freeway. When it came time to buy a new bike I didn't even blink or hesitate... It was a Harley-Davidson.
Of course the HARLEYS not worth that much, but either is a CORVETTE, BMW, MERCEDES OR PORSHE. Your only paying for the NAME, and the companys know it. They say you want it, you pay for it. And fools like us cough up the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. Damn fools we are!

I ride mine everywhere in all kinds of weather, so it's not something that I only ride certains times of the year. I haven't put a 1000 miles on my 01 truck this year due to the bike. It's dependable, looks great, and is a joy just to ride to the grocery store (you wouldn't believe how much I can get in the saddle bags and TP). My wife's and my truck are paid off and the bike will be soon. I can't get her to buy a new car, but she did get me some new footpegs for Valentine's Day! What a woman!

Yes, they are extremely overpriced compared to a car. You get around 5 times as much material in a car (metal, plastics etc) and the cost of R&D is much higher than a cruiser style bike. H-D is not alone though, the japanese bikes are overpriced too. I do believe cruisers are more overpriced than other styles of bikes. The construction is simple and not much R&D is going into the bikes.

So you're saying that a Harley with 1/5 of the material and a low-tech construction should really need to cost as much as a car? Get real.
Take a new car you spend 25000 for in 2009. Four years later it's worth 10000. if you are lucky. Buy a new HD for 20k and I bet it's still worth 15000 four years later as long as you haven't dogged it.
Plus the bike is a hell of alot more fun!
