You don't have to wear one here
I have a full face for winter, and a couple of half helmets for when I wear one during the summer.

If you're looking for the best from a safety standpoint buy a full face. If you like your face in the wind buy a half or 3/4.

I have an HJC symax II ff modular, an HD 1/2 and a Fulmer 3/4. Most of the time I wear the 1/2, and rarely wear the 3/4.

The ff modular is indespensible in the winter. I also use it on road trips because it has headsets installed. I find it rather noisy and may either try a different brand or go with a regular full face.

Whatever you get make sure it fits you well.

I don't wear a helmet unless it is cold or I am in a state that requires it. When I do wear one it is a half helmet which is very comfortable, lets you feel some wind and noise and when real cold I wear a balaclava under it and I'm good to go. A half helmet also packs fairly easily for travelling when not wearing it. For ultimate protection I guess a full face is the best apart from a cage.

I have an HJC Carbon Fiber 3/4 which gets the most use. It is also very light and Snell rated. My Shoei Multitech is for cold or rainy days. It also has great aerodynamics and definitely reduces neck fatigue. I have a Skid Lid for quick trips to the store and for those beautiful days when you want to enjoy the wind in your face and hear that incomparable sound of a Harley V-Twin

I wear a half helmet or a beenie helmet. I get much better vision and can hear better then with a 3/4 or full face one. I have avoided a couple of wrecks by seeing what's coming from the side.

Let me emphasize something that Jimmers said.

MAKE SURE IT FITS YOU WELL.

This means you have to try it on. You can't assume that whatever size fits the melon in one brand will be the same in another. Helmet brands and even styles within brands are shaped differently, too. Anyway, what I'm saying is don't just order one from Hippy's Half Helmets somewhere on the internet and expect it to fit.

Also, if you're going to buy one do yourself a favor and make sure it's DOT approved. I suspect there might be some around here that may disagree and will speak their piece.

I'm in a helmet state and wear a Fulmer half helmet most of the time and a 3/4 when it gets cold.

Because you are a new rider, I suggest a full face helmet. I use a HJC full face.

This summer I am switching to a 1/2 helmet because a full face is friggin hot in the summer.
