Some changes have occured in the enforcemant of the Helmet Law in California! Thanks to the late Richard Quigley's perserverence and the Supreme Court. You can read it at bolta.com
Basically stated:
(1) Officers shall not cite for "beanie type" helmets
(2) Officers shall not seize any helmet as evidence.
(3) Only the complete absence of head covering, is cause for an issuance of a citation.
(4) A supervisors approval shall be obtained prior to citing a motorcyclist for wearing any type of headcovering the officer deems is not a helmet.
(5) Any other headcovering, such as a ball cap, scarf, doorag etc. shall be treated as a correctable offense, i.e. a "fix it" ticket instead of a fineable offense.
I got this info in the April issue of "Thunder Press".
The only bill proposed that I read about was AB 1205, amending the current helmet law. It would allow people over 18 yrs old, with an M1 license for more than 2 yrs and have completed a MC safety course, to choose whether to wear a helmet or not.
I would love to see it pass. I wear a novelty and if this passed I would still wear it, because I think something is better than nothing, but I do believe wearing a helmet should be a choice.
That's cool. I believe that wearing a helmet is ones choice... my wife will always make that choice for me though and will forever force me to wear a DOT helmet.
