I have never needed to bump started my HD. Just wonder if the battery would fail could you "BUMP START" if you were going fast enough.
Like going down a hill or with a few of your buddies pushing you to get enough speed going
an alternator has to have power available to make power. a really low battery may not start. recently the local police new RK wouldn't start and they pushed in all over the parking lot and it wouldn't hit a lick. i walked over and removed the cover under the seat and found a battery cable loose. they had been installed such that the weight of the cable over time loosened the connections. tightened the bolts and it started with a quick bump of the starter switch. i learned years ago with GM side mount connectors to position the cables where the weight of the cable keeps the connections tight. if you can't position them that way use zip ties to support the weight away from the connectors.
I bump started my 84 Sportster several times when the battery died completely. It only has a generator, but no fuel pump. If I remember right I went to 4th gear. Other wise it would just slide the rear tire. Never had a reason to try it with my Evo Softail.
a generator will make its own power and alternator needs a little to begin to make power. that's why they tell you to not remove a cable from the alternator if the engine is running.
an old school generator check was to remove a cable when the engine was running. if the engine stayed running the generator was operating. if the engine died the generator was working.

I recently left the switch on my 07 in the 'run' position for about two hours...got on the bike and battery didnt have enough 'juice' to turn the engine over but I did have instrument lights...rolled it up to about 10 mph in 3rd and she fired right up...
