I have a 2008 ultra and since it was new it has pinged from 2800rpm to 3500 rpm. I have checked with H-D and have had the suggested down load. The pinging persists. Will a stage 1 DL and new intake and exhaust correct this problem
cvse346, maybe. I had a 07 ultra that pinged horribly. I could not use 6th at all even at 80 mph. HD dealer said that was just the way they were...all leaned out to meet epa standards. Well, I ended up replacing the ecm with a t-max, installed an arlen ness super sucker a/c and rienhart slippons. It cured the pining, in fact I could now cruise at 55 in 6th no problem. It also made the engine run considerably cooler, previously it was so hot it actually burned my wife's leg through her jeans. So sorry for the long story but doing a stage one might help but I would consider some kind of fuel mgmt. system either the hd sert or PC or the t-max. I chose the t-max because I could do mod from a laptop myself and with the autotune option it would detect any mods that I did in the future. I bout mine from Cateye Custom. I think his handle on here is shooter56 or something like that. He was very helpful and his prices are not bad. Hope this helped.
I have a 2009 FXDC with the same problem. I'm not sure about the exact RPM's as I don't have a tach. Pings when I get on it. I'm not lugging it either. The dealer couldn't find anything wrong, but gave me a pair of Nightrider XIED's to try. That corrected the problem but then it was too rich when taking off as in leaving a stoplight. Dealer suggested I install a K&N filter element at this point. It's back to pinging but not as bad as original.Dealer sent my ECU back to H-D for a software update. No difference. Runs pretty good but still pings some. Now they are suggesting some sort of fuel controller. So, to answer your question...I guess so. I think the damn thing should run well right out of the box, but it doesn't. Good luck.
Somethin' ain't right. My '07 is stock except for SE slipons, I run 91 octane & has never pinged even when hot. Pinging is detonation & ain't good for your engine if left unchecked.
I know a guy who had a pinging problem until he started using high octane gas. I didn't know him until I met him at a gas station and he was putting 87 octane in it, and I made a remark about his bike pings a little, He said almost all the time. Last time I saw him he was using the right grade of gas and he said his bike was cured but he didn't like buying the more expensive gas.
Try a SMALL amount of octane boost in your next tank of premium gas to rule out the gas factor. If that doesn’t help, it’s either ECM (timing) or valve train adjustment related. My 2 cents. Bob
Finally had to sell my 07 Sportster because of pinging. It had the extended warranty on it but did no good because they said they couldn't fix it.Got a 05 FSTSC with carb no more pinging.05 EG injected no pinging either.

If it is ONLY pinging that you want to stop (and you really need to do that for sake of the scoot for sure) then the HD spec next stage air cleaner and ecm flash should do the trick... and give you some peace of mind and a bit better performance. But, most go ahead and jump past that simple ping fix and get a fuel mgmt. + correct breathing on both ends of the motor. If the dealer's tuner guy isn't someone you can really be comfortable with, then an indy with a good local reputation can advise.
Had a new 85 Superglide was doing the same thing the mechanic at the shop told me to put a couple capfulls of Marvel mystery oil in the next tank of gas, it made it quit pinging
