While I'd never rule out piston slap, I wouldn't believe some one who isn't an experienced mechanic would ever hear it. Piston slap usually has a light ring (as in bell ring) to it. A tap wouldn't be descriptive of piston slap IMHO.

Also, while it isn't unusual for the oil pressure to drop severely at idle, I wouldn't care for 0 psi myself. Harleys are prone for oil pressure drops due to the heat, and they 'survive' more off volume/flow than pressure. But, since it is a new occurrance after 58,000 miles I'd say it needs attention.

It also isn't inconcievable that the pressure switch itself is getting weak, but add in the additional tapping, which reportedly began at the same time, and I'd still be looking for the cause of the pressure drop. Just from what has been discussed so far by the OP, I'd have to guess it's an oil passage restriction or unusual high heat issue. Which brings to mind, that even low oil level could be the cause...

Put a guage on yours and you will definitely see 0 at idle. The Ultra pictured( bought brand new last April) and the 04 Ultra( bought new by my dad, that I now own) and a 02 roadglide I had, all went to 0 at idle. Not saying an oil issue isn't his problem, just stating that 0 pressure at idle on a Harley is normal on the guage.

I'm not arguing with what you said. But, I also know from experience that most 0-60 pressure guages aren't that accurate on the lower end. If I remember correctly, I think most sending units open the circuit at a very low pressure anyway, but there has to be SOME pressure to cause the circuit to ground itself thereby generating the light. I am simply sharing what I have known to be relative to the OP's issue, not debating what anyone is saying. If I were to get seriously detailed, describing everything which could cause the tapping noise, I'd be here all night typing...

Again, not arguing but MY twin cam engine has an LMR-004 baisley spring which I added to it, increasing the oil check valve spring pressure by 30%, and I seriously doubt that MINE would read 0 if I did install a guage.

Take the slot cap off your oil pump located on the right side of your engine just behind the forward cylinder. there will be a spring, a ball & a screen in there. see if the screen has filings in it. Drain your oil & look for filings in there as well. I would cut open my oil filter & spread out the paper media looking for more filings. Some might think this is too much but if something is going ugly inside, the more it damages, the higher your repair cost will be!
