Your service manual should have the interval for changing it in the maintenance section.

Or if you have misplaced your service manual you can go here and find the recommended interval for your model along with all the other maintenance items.

Dude last time I checked it's alright to ask questions, isn't that what the forum is all about.

change it at 20K and the manual on my bike recommends 50K. the HD mechanic I spoke with said 20K and I changed it myself so it wasn't a sales trick. there's a thread that gives detailed instructions on how to do it on certain year bikes.

If you need any help just ask how to do it, even if you get the check the manual answers.

Never said it isn't OK to ask a question. But...What's he gonna do when he's sittin on the side of road someplace and doesn't have access to a computer to ask why his scooter stopped running, or how to adjust his drive belt that started jumpin teeth because it stretched out and he didn't know he was supposed to be checking the tension? Just trying to help him to learn to learn on his own and not depend on others for every little thing. That's all.

I assume you noticed I did give him a link to a dealer site that he could find the maint schedule for his bike so he can see it and print or save it so he will know what other items he should be staying on top of as well.

If you are having your dealer or an indy change your front tire and they have the wheel & brake caliper off then it is not much more labor to change the fork oil then. I try to bundle service items that I am having done that require disassembly of a major part of the bike. Like:

1. Front tire
2. Front brake pads
3. Fork oil
4. Steer head bearing adjustment & fall away.

OR
1. Rear tire
2. rear brake pads
3. swing arm bushing
4. belt tension adjustment
5. rear wheel alignment

If you talk to the service manager at your dealer they will usually reduce a good portion of the labor for the extra items.

Because it was so simple to do - I did mine at 5k and glad I did. The stuff in there looked like hell. Replaced with BelRay 15w Fork Oil. About 10k miles later, I swapped out the lower forks for chrome. The fluid looked brand new.

I'll probably do mine every 10 - 15 thousand because its so easy, but that's excessive if you're paying to have it done.

Usually change mine whenever I change out the front tire. Works out to about 18k-20k miles between changes.
