Well there must be a lot of homos on hdforums, because at any given time there is a lot more people in the softail thread then there is the Dyna thread.
Own a Dyna, ridden a Softail. Overall, the Dyna has sharper handling. Better turning radius. However, you sit in, not on a Softail.Classic look them Softails. It all depends on taste and needs.
i think the rear shocks play a major role. the further out the socks are from the center of mass the more stable it should be. now im not a scientist and have no way to test or prove this hypothesis.
Actually the soft tail has a lot more unsprung weight in the rear and the motion of the suspension is less than optimum for handling - it was designed that way to look like a hardtail. The position of the spring or springs does not matter as much although a single spring will work more effectively than a double spring shock due to a reduction in friction.
This thread reminds me of pick-up games in High School . . . the East hates the West until game over . . . then ya pick new teams and the East agains hates the West even though the new teams are a complete mix of the previous teams. Softail vs Dyna? geez, if ya want a sport bike niether bike is going to make "real" magic when the road ain't straight no more. Truth be told; there's as much difference between the bikes the squids ride on the street and a "real" fully preped race bike and the squids bike and a Harley. If you really want to go-fast . . . take it to the track. I've been there and done that and trust me there ain't no street bike anything like a real race bike that you can run at Laguna Seca . . . monthly motorcyle magazines not-with-standing. On the street . . . might as well be comfortable . . .
Well said. Agressive street riding on a Harley? I vote softail. But this is just an opinion, not meant to be taken seriously, bashed or otherwise criticized.
Sloptails tour better than a Dyna, well atleast they have a softer ride until you really load up the Dyna. Just my opinion, I've put a ton of miles on both.
Of course a RG can out tour both of them and handles a lot like a Dyna.
Pretty sure it was the copy of American Iron on stands now, or V-twin current edition. I just read it in the last week at the book store. The reasoning was bottoming out with short travel distance. I had a lowered FLHTC and the back tire would botttom out on the bolt that held the back of the seat. I'll try to find tomorrow and post the exact reference.
