Default Passing lights

Oh no, not another passing light question, but I need to know if H.D. wired the passing lights up (OEM) to only the dim headlights because of law?? or because of the added stress on the electrical system. Too many amps on one circut???

I would like to hook my passing lights up to work on dim & bright lights so I can see the road better when I ride home after work around midnight in the country. If its the law, well I can get around that. Just don't want to hurt the bike.

I have a 2000 Heritage Classic

It's a legal thing. Only so many lumens allowed. Low + Passing Lamps are OK but High Beam + Passing Lamps exceeds the maximum.

Your electrical system can easilly handle the electrical load of the passing lamps + High Beam + more if you want.

I hooked mine up to an old auto foot dimmer switch, and mounted the switch down by the gear shifter so they can be turned on or off from there. I also changed the stock 27w bulb to a 55w, makes a big differance at night.

That's the way I wired mine when I added the passing lamps to the SG. Love it.

There's a vendor out there called MrTaillights. I got a simple kit from them for my pick-up so that I can have my highs, lows, and fogs all on at the same time. You can search for them and see if they have a kit for motorcycles, but I think they do. I'll try to look it up too. It was as simple as splicing some wires together and adding a small relay.

I found them, and sent them an email. I'll let you know what they say. It sure helped my truck light up the road, having both high and low beams on at the same time.

I did it, took the yellow wire off from the passing light switch, connected a black wire to the switch, ran it up with the harness to the gauge cluster on the tank, stripped insulation from the red & black wire to the ignition feed and soldered the black wire in. works great. can't wait to ride at night to see the differance.

one thing though, the horn button is right by the bright light switch. I just got it wired up, my girl friend came out to see the progress and I beeped the horn instead of the bright light while i was in front of the bike. I jumped & she is still laughing.

Thanks for all the info, JIm
