Exclamation Roads that'll kill you.

What I mean by the thread title is roads which your city / town, Province / State think are just fine, since they leave them accessible to general traffic, but that are clearly not being considered by anyone who has ever ridden on 2 wheels. In my riding this season, mostly around southern Ontario but down through NY State and Vermont, I rode on and through more "construction" projects (and some roads where their condition was just what it was), where the surface was potentially a killer. I'm thinking about things like significant drops, where excavation has been done, or stretches on a highway where they've scoured off the asphalt from one or 2 lanes while leaving another lane untouched... resulting in about a 3 inch "curb" effect that'll grab your front wheel and try like hell to dump you, if you try changing lanes. Oh yeah, there's the metal plating too, where they've dug thing up and laid down very large stretches of smmoth metal plate to compensate for the hole that's underneath... not too bad when it's dry but not good when it's rained.

So I know the roads have to be kept up and that they've got to do the work sometime but... if they leave it open to use then they should consider all the vehicles they licence and rake in tax dollars from. Or maybe they should post appropriate signage, so you know what you're getting into? As a taxpayer though I've got to tell you, I get royally pi$$ed when my tax dollar at work results in a road surface that seems like it's been intentionally designed to send me for an a$$-slide. It's not the grunt on the CAT who bothers me; it's the engineer or safety-Gomer that looks at the job at the end of the day and says "yeah, that's good enough", just before he gets into his cage and drives away. And then of course there's just the lousy roads that aren't under construction and are just plain bad....

Name your favorite (least) condition or experiences you've had. (BTW, Ontario was far worse than the US States I rode in this year).

Will Mention what is known as Malfunction Junction in Florida even for Commuters who drive it every day it's dangerous .. Is where Interstate 75 and Interstate 4 Merge.. All where traffic is heading one way or the other for Tourists traps and a Lot of Industrial Parks all in the same area.. Is nothing to see drivers jump 3 lanes all at once when realize they are heading for the wrong section of where they want to be .. If any of this is under construction, multiply the risk factor by 10 ...

495/beltway in virginia... from alexandria around to 95south, and the whole west side ... major construction, lane shifts, and no shoulders/k-rails right up to the line so there's no place to go if somebody has a bad day

for a while 395 was bad with some huge expansion joint problems - a few would just about toss you off your seat, can't imagine what it'd be like on a rigid frame (spinal injuries for sure). they've ground most of those down though finally

I ride like all roads are a hazard. I worry more about cagers that are texting, talking on there cell phone, etc. and just don't see motorcycles. I try to avoid congested areas and construction.

Nothing new here. Seems like there are more interstates milled than usual from the "Federal Stimulus" joke. Backroads have always been unpredictable. Heck, I'm even considering a dual sport for some of the remote places I like to explore. I agree with previous post that cars and trucks are more of a concern.

PA, Rt 309 from Hazleton to Tamaqua. The road surface is a mess. Dips, up lifts and pot holes. Traffic lights in both towns suck.
I-476 turn pike. Bad road surface, narrow lanes and crazy drivers.

Highway 90 between Lafayette and New Iberia. It is about 20 miles of nascar racing on the worst concrete track imaginable. Then throw in cane trucks this time of year and you are really in for some fun.

+1 on this one! Man, it scares the crap outta me anymore and of course, so many of the drivers are complete and utter morons. I use County Parkway to get to 95 most of the time now.
