I had to go to school for two years, In downtown Tacoma WA. I got what is called a sling backpack.
Only tools I carried were my cell phone, Progressive road side assistance card ($12 a year), and a 6 inch cresent wrench.
I did carry my bike cover, chain & lock. clear goggles, clean cloth, & Cat Crap.

Sweatshirt, scarf, laptop, and my lunch.
It now sits in the closet gathering dust. $40 if you want it.

I used a backpack once, because I had to. It was an unpleasant riding experience. No way on earth I'd ride around with one of those if there was any other option. That's without even getting to the "look like you're on your way to junior high school special ed class" look.

Backpacks look more dorky than an autographed pink power ranger full-face helmet...with bluetooth.

I wear a backpack about 20% of the time. No issues. To all of the "haters": Get a life.

Happy New Year to you too!
I use those plastic bags that they hand out at Krogers'. There cheap and light weight. I carry booze and whatnot in them. As far as tools, just me.
Hope this helps your decision making process.

IF I was looking in to a backpack, it would HAVE to have a padded area for my laptop, a good pad against my back, a outside section for pens/pencils/wallet/ect, a water bottle holder, and in my opinion, a THICK LEATHER bottom piece for strength. The one last thing is it MUST be WATER RESISTANT !

does not have the leather, but I do like this one . . . .

During riding season I wear a backpack just about every day because I have to lug my laptop to/from work each day. It's a black/gray Dell laptop backpack and it holds a lot of ****. The trick to riding comfortably is loosening the shoulder straps enough to let most of the weight sit on the passenger seat behind you.
