As much as I love to ride, long rides on the Interstate (edited from highway) just doesn't seem to be worth it for me for a couple reasons:
*I have no windshield so the wind gets to be a little much
*I'm a lot more stressed since I'm on edge because I don't trust the cagers
*There is no scenery
*It gets boring
I like highways just fine, it is the interstates that I would rather avoid. Some of my favorite rides are on old highways, such as the coastal highway along the west coast. What a beautiful ride.
The windshield problem can be fixed. the other, well, if it gets that way for me, I guess I will just quit riding. Your concerns are justifiable though and only you can make that decision. good luck

Old highways are great...I meant to say Interstates in my original post...I-40, I-95 etc.
Back-roads and secondary highways at a slower pace are my favorites, but I don't mind the interstate much - after all, everyone is (usually) going the same direction. I'm never bored riding, and scenery is in the perception - I like open space others call dull.
Now a freeway through the city - screw that.
I'm not real fond of the superslab. I only use it when I need to cover alot of ground quickly....need to get home, or need to get somewhere quickly. Otherwise, it's all old highway and backroads (FM's) for me. I dislike the superslab for the same reasons as you, but I do have a windshield. I also hate riding along with 18 wheelers and other trucks....

To each their own. I dont mind interstates except for the general lack of scenery and interesting places to stop. If wind is a problem you can always get a cheap full face. Plus, I worry less about traffic than on off roads because no one turns in front of you and you control the speed & cushion around you relative to to others.
Generally feel safer because of the median and no cross traffic but it sure isn't fun and sometimes it's downright painful. Especially when you know the next 200 miles is going to look just like the last 200 miles. Couldn't do w/o a ws myself. I've tried it on short distances and it just wears me out.
