Default Breakdown and HOG Coverage Beware!

Yesterday, 10/8, the wife and I went for a ride on our new 1200 XLR because it was such a nice day. We got onto I86 west bound at Salamanca, NY and rode for a couple of miles when we had a blowout on the rear tire at 70 mph! The closest I have ever come to laying a street bike down. The very worst section that it could of happened on I86. Gaurd rails for miles in both directions and on a big curve. No problem, I'm a HOG member and have roadside assistance. Wrong! $100 max. and was told it would be 2-3 hours and I had to withdraw $300 cash from an ATM to pay for the tow on the spot. No ATM's out in the middle of nowhere. Called AAA and they wouldn't cover towing a motorcycle so I called my insurance Co. and they called same towing Co. 2-3 hours and it was a NYS law no riders in truck. By now it's dark, wife is scared to death, cell phone is about to go dead and we still haven't gotten anywhere in 31/2 hrs. of dodging vehicles on the side of the road. As a last resort I called a friend with a trailer and he finally came and got us at 8:45pm. Thank God for friends! The wife said she doesn't want to get back on the bike again so it might be going down the road. Was going to have the local H/D pick the bike up and repair the rear tire this morning but couldn't even do that as the dealership is closed on Mondays.

Man that's the pits. Just darn glad you were able to stop safely with mama on the back. I have a couple of questions, didn't the towing co take plastic and how much was the tow?? HOG 100 plus 300 more, that's unreal. Leason i learned here is to have a couple of my buddies phone numbers that have trailers.

Check out MoTow on the AMA website. Lets see here. I think I have a link...http://www.amadirectlink.com/roadride/motow.asp
Maybe better than nothing. I have read the horror stories about HOG on here.

Sorry to hear about your experience, but contrast the inconvenience and $$$ with what might have occurred had you not been able to control the bike. Look at the good in this one!

The HOG suppliment is $100 for towing. It is very clearly detailed in the benefits description. You might consider the additional coverage HOG offers via RoadAmerica. They will get your bike where it needs to go, and the HOG $100 is still available.

Glad you're OK!

Broke down on the way back from Sturgis last year = $360 tow to the nearest dealer. HOG sent me a check for $100 of it, but I was still out $260 on an 05 (new at the time) bike for the tow. Ended up being an injector problem, all covered under warranty; but they wouldn't do anything about the tow. Called Harley direct, b!itched a little, and they set me up a $150 voucher at the dealer for parts. The bike only had 3500 miles on it at the time for crying out loud. Still ended up costing me $110 + a motel room for the night. Now I have the HOG & Road America so it covers 100% of the tow, hotels, other bills, etc.

No. They only wanted to deal in cash and they wanted me to hand them $300 when they arrived.

The info. I got in my 2007 Ultra Classic warranty package was Harley will pick up the whole tab Motel,Towing,Tire repair or replacement.

I hope this is going be true if it is ever needed.

I for one never ride on spoke and tube wheels and tires, because if you have the
aboveproblem in this post with tubless tires, you just pull out the air pump and plug
kit and go along on your marry way in about 10 minutes. Then you can replace the
tire when you have time!

(not in the middle of the night, in the middle of no where)

Sorry for your problems, I guess when your old like me and ride over 50,000 miles
a year for 40+ years you learn a trick or two along the way!

1) Call local or State police.
2) Leave said bike bike at location.
3) Have cop or cab take you to nearest hotel.
4) Call nearest dealer and arrange pick-up and fix up.
5) If bike is not there for dealer, call insurance company.
6) Buy new bike.

Guys, you need to read the paper work!! HOG only covers $100 fro a tow & you must first pay for it. The other coverage you talk about is at an additional price (there are 2 levels). That coverage is from a different Co. in association with HOG. They pay for unlimited towing, while HOG only pays for 1 tow per year up to $100. Also the deluxe level is the only one that pays for a motel & even then only under certain circumstances. I have used them for 2 years now & they do what they say they will.

Thats nice, but I was talking about the factory 2007 Harley warranty, not H.O.G.
