Default Horn Problem

I have a 1988 FLHS that has had a horn problem for 10 years. Now and then when I pushed the horn button it would only make an audible 'thump' sound and not a horn blowing. To condense down what I have been doing I lengthened the power wire to the horn and replaced the wire crimp on connection. Then I have found the ground wire rusted in half and replaced it with a like type of ground wire. Each time the horn would work normally. Then I had to replace the grouind againg but this time I used an aircraft quality heavy futy wire with welded ends and that fixed it again. Now I have replaced the horn itself. No luck so where should I look now? Rerun the ground wire? How many volts does the horn get when the button is pushed? I want to put this decade long aggravation to rest so HELP!!

After 10 years, I'd blame the mechanic. Sorry, couldn't resist.

If you've replaced ALL wiring and the horn, the only thing left is the switch, unless there is/should be a relay. Service manual will have a wiring diagram, in case somebody's messed it up. Check polarity.

Did you check the relay? That would be my guess, a bad connection on the trigger side.

If you over tighten the horn on the mount, it will effect the sound.

LOL!!!!

My dad and I just bought some louder horns for our bikes. He really wanted a louder one. Not even sure I've even used mine, but I got one too. I Just rev my engine. Sense I got louder pipes, never really felt the need to honk.
