Default Removing Oil Pan

I have a small leak coming from the oil pan gasket on my 05 Road King and I am going to replace the gasket myself. Just taking a quick look today before I came into work, I am assuming that the rear wheel is going to have to come off to get the pan out, the problem is that there is no way with my jack under the bike that I would be able to get under there and work. How can I support the bike with the wheel off? Are there any tips any of you can pass along to help in removing and reinstalling the oil pan?

Thanks
Phil

first, I don't think you have to take off the wheel, not positive on this, secondly what I do is I have a set of motorcycle jack stands that I use for such instances, similar to car stands, but smaller and the heads are shaped to fit the frame rails, you might be able to do something like that. by the way, I do this on a table jack with the front wheel locked into the holder. I wouldn't try this on the floor, bike can roll and fall off stands, please be careful no matter what you do!

I do have a wheel chock for the front I intended to use to keep the bike steady. I thought about using jack stands (I do not have MC jack stands), but was not sure if I could get that to work or not. I will have to look into the MC jack stands.

I took the rear wheel off when I changed the pan on my '07 SG. Left the bike on the jack too. You can get in there with the right tools with the bike on the jack (or at least I was able to). It's kind of tedious, but it can be done.

Why are you removing rear wheel? You might need a good set of ball head allen wrenches.

rear wheel does not have to come off, but it does make it easier if it is off cause you can jack up rear and support via the swing arm. I just did this on my 01 WG, I had to make a custom short allen to get to 2 of the bolts on right side, frame was in way.

I just assumed that the rear wheel would have to come off to be able to slide the pan out. I think that I will try it without taking the wheel off (when I do it) and see.

Working all weekend, but have all day sunday next weekend set aside for it.

Thanks again for the help.

OK, after I cleaned up the underside of the bike really well, I could find the leak and it turns out it is not coming from the Oil Pan. It is leaking from between the Primary and the tranny. Here is a new thread with a pic if you want to check it out or have any advice.

Thanks...
